Sammy, a teenage cashier at a grocery store, has a typical teenage boys’ point of view of the world. Sammy likes to watch all kinds of people and has comments about how they look, what they do and where they go. Sammy has an odd sense of humor as he describes three attractive girls, an older lady, and the flow of the shoppers in his store.


The first view Sammy gives the reader is a description of three girls that walk into the store where he works. Sammy first talks about one girl who has on a plaid-green two-piece bathing suit. Sammy says “she was a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it, where the sun never seems to hit, at the top of the backs of her legs”(par.1). Sammy uses some unusual wording when he talks about the girls’ buttocks. He calls her buttocks a ‘can’ and how the whites’ under the back of her buttocks looks like ‘two crescent rolls’. I have never heard the saying ‘can’ as being a person’s butt. But his view of the ‘white’ under the butt, I have heard called ‘crescents rolls’. Sammy must love to watch girls since he seems to talk all about their beauty. When he was staring at the girls he even rang up an item wrong for a customer because he wasn’t paying attention to what he was suppose to be doing.


Sammy describes the second girl as “…a tall one, with black hair that hadn’t quite frizzed right, and one of these sunburns right across under the eyes, and a chin that was too long � you know the kind of girl other girls think is very “striking” and “attractive” but never quite makes it, as they very well know, which is why they like her so much”(par.). Sammy must think all other girls are jealous of her beauty with that comment. I don’t think that is why her friends hang out with her. I think they like her because she is really a nice person underneath her looks.


Then there is a third girl that Sammy calls the ‘queen’. He likes to watch her because she is the leader of the three girls. She is a pretty girl also, and Sammy likes to look at pretty girls. He checks her out watching her walk through the store while the other two girls follow her. Sammy doesn’t think these girls have much other than their looks from his comment of “Do you really think it’s a mind in their or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?”(par.). By this comment, he thinks girls are only put on this earth to look good. I don’t think he really understands that girls are just as smart as boys. He judges these girls just by the way they look and act in his store.

I got a chuckle out of Sammy’s view of the customer he has in front of him when the three girls walk into his store. He say’s “She’s one of these cash-register-watchers, a witch about fifty with rouge on her cheekbones and no eyebrows, and I know it made her day to trip me up”(Par.1). Sammy doesn’t seem to like people who observe him when he works. He probably thinks the customers don’t trust him or the machines to ring their purchases up properly. He probably wonders why this lady is not looking at the same thing he is � the three girls that just walked into the store. Sammy comments about the lady “By the time I got her feathers smoothed and her goodies into a bag- she gives me a little snort in passing, if she’d been born at the right time they would have burned her over in Salem…”(par.). He makes references to the Salem Witch Trails in 16 because she seems like such a mean personality (a witch) to him. Sammy wishes people wouldn’t get so upset by an honest mistake at the cash register. I think Sammy doesn’t like confrontations with people by the way he talks about this lady.


One thing that surprised me is Sammy’s view of customers shopping in his store. He refers to them as ‘sheep’. One comment Sammy makes is “The sheep pushing their carts down the aisle- the girls were walking against the usual traffic (not that we have one-way signs or anything)”(par.5). I think he is talking about how all the customs are so familiar with the stores layout and know which aisle has what products, that they look like sheep being herded through the pens. When you shop at a store that you know very well, you tend to walk through it the same way each time you visit. Another comment he makes is “all this while, the customers had been showing up with their carts but, you know, sheep, seeing a scene, they had all bunched up on Stokesie…” (par.1). He again refers to customers as ‘sheep’ that people tend to avoid conflicts even if it means having to change lines to pay for their purchases. This is true to a point. If there is be a problem at a register checkout, people tend to avoid it and go to another register.


Sammy is a very intelligent boy who knows what he wants. He is one of those people who won’t let anything hold him down, and would make a good life for himself in the future. His views on life are very real and true. Sammy helped me see everyday life in a different perspective.
