Many authors base their novels on one specific theme, or element they want to reveal to their readers. For example, Stephen King writes mainly about macabre horror and James Patterson focuses on the supernatural. However, Going After Cacciato teaches many life lessons. Just as Moby Dick self consciously expresses that determination and obsession with obtaining certain things can end up detrimental, by this I’m alluding to the fact that the Captain ironically is killed by the same whale he is so determined to capture, Going After Cacciato is a story about delusions, reality, and morals. In Going After Cacciato Tim O’Brien pedantically asserts that war is evil.

Throughout the novel O’Brien poignantly allows his characters to regress into earlier, happier stages of their lives. In the observation post, Paul Berlin remembered what his father had said on their last night along the Des Moines River. “You’ll see some terrible stuff, I guess, That’s how it goes.” “But try to look for the good things too.” “They’ll be there if you look.” “So watch for them (O’Brien, 58). This is an illustration of beauty being born from despair. Paul is attempting to escape the physiological turmoil brought on by war by examining everything and trying to filter out the good in the situation. On page 70, Berlin attempts to treat a young Vietnamese girl. This shows that Berlin has a sensitive side. Most soldiers never show compassion towards the enemy, but ironically Berlin does. O’Brien uses this to allude to Paul’s father’s earlier statement about the good in war, and to suggest that war almost brings out the best in people. Almost being the key word, for clearly the good in war in no way outweighs or even equals the bad.

Although, Paul sometimes escapes into a fantasy world O’Brien always brings him back to the reality of war. War has no rules. No time outs. No penalties for fouls. If you can’t accept this, then you can’t accept war. Paul is dramatically forced to face the fact that war is war no matter how it is perceived. War has its own reality. War kills, maims, and rips up the land. It makes orphans and widows. These are the things of war (17). Doc says that politics and ideology have nothing to do with how a war is fought or what keeps the soldiers going (177). As sad as it sounds wars are lost or won based on the production of materials, not the determination of the soldiers. The only reason most soldiers don’t run is because they have a tremendous amount of self-respect and fear. On page 0 O’Brien metaphorically refers to the earth as a canvas and bloodshed as red paint smeared all over the canvas. This is symbolic of the numerous lives lost in the chaos of war.

In Going After Cacciato, O’Brien raises the moralistic question, How to do right in an evil situation. The killing of the water buffalo is an example of a useless atrocity. O’Brien allows the characters in his book to perform unnecessary murders to signify the evil. In every war innocence is lost, and evil seems to rule the world. O’Brien also asserts that war is useless and meaningless. In Quand Ngai, they did not speak of politics. It wasn’t taboo, or bad luck it just wasn’t talked about. Diplomacy and morality were beyond them. Hardly anyone cared (6). This suggests that politicians make wars, but never fight in them. Soldiers fight in wars but rarely talk about politics. This brings about the moral aspect of who is right and who is wrong, or lost in the midst of war. The reason we keep war is because there is something inherent in human nature that likes to destroy, to do evil. War is like a prison with no exit (6). Knowing that there are no right answers and that no matter what you do in a war it is wrong, the only solution is to walk away. Maybe evil cannot be defeated, but you can at least turn your back on it.

Tim O’Brien effectively uses war to express morals, delusions, and fantasy. Going After Cacciato is not only a book about war; it is a book about life.
