Time may pass, people and places may change, but some principles and aspects of life will stay the same forever. Throughout this play the themes were the unimportance of time, people, and places, and that all the things that make life worth living can zoom by and not be noticed at all. As time passes in the play, the ending still supported the fact that those three aspects are indifferent to the quality of a life. Our Town presents several important principles that should be followed whether it is 101 or 001.


One of the themes in the play was to realize life as it is lived, and not take it for granted. This theme was clear at the end of the play when Emily dies and she wants to go back and see her life that has passed. She wishes to do so because she wants to recapture some of those moments that she took for granted as simple everyday life that mean so much more to her now that she has died. After traveling to her twelfth birthday she cannot stand to look at how carelessly she lived her life. She had barely savored a single moment of time all her life. This shows that after one dies, they regret not appreciating how great a life they had actually lived.


The second theme present in the play is that principles in life do not change because time passes. The way that the people of Grover’s Corners lived their lives is the basic foundation of all life. These basics are how people live from day to day, how people fall in love, and how they eventually die. Those three aspects of life will never change. The theme was revealed in the play each time the stage manager said, “things don’t change much around here.” That quote was from the Introduction to Act III, but he also says many other lines throughout the play that are similar to it. This theme was more of an underlying theme, so it was more or less just understood and accepted at the end of the play.
