Hearts In Atlantis

Hearts in Atlantis by Stephen King was a big book filled with

blas words. Yes, it was fairly good work for his new fiction but not

compared to his usual horror novels such as Carrie, It, and

Tommyknockers. The book had a nonsensical twist of fantasy/reality.

There were three main characters in this story, Bobby Garfield,

Carol Gerber, and John Sullivan or Sully-John. They all tie together by

being childhood friends who parted ways in 160, after an array of

strange events. The book is then divided into chronological sections

involving a character from the first portion of the book along with

some factual information of the time (example, one section takes place

during the time of Vietnam).

The plot was of three kids who part their ways after the bizarre

events in the summer of 160. It all starts when a man named Ted

Brauntigan moves into the same apartment building of Bobby Garfield.

Bobby is angered by Sully-John attending a camp, so he goes to Ted

looking for a friend, in which they became. Little did Bobby know that

he had become encompassed into a world of fantasy and reality. Ted

had been running from the “Low Men,” who needs Ted’s ability to take

over their world. The low men capture Ted, but he later escapes (which

comes into the story later.)

The resolution was far away from the exotic “Low Men”. The

resolution began in the 177 section of the book, this was where you

heard of Carol’s death in a bomb incident. The other part, years later,

was the death of Sully-John. The death of an old friend brings Bobby

Garfield back to Harwich, Connecticut. All of these events tie in with

the strange, twisted ending with Bobby searching for what Ted had

promised him.

The main idea or theme of the novel would have to be “things are

not always what they seem”. The main example of this would be the

low men. Bobby had never heard of the low men but once Ted informed

him he realized how the things that appeared as normal coincidences

or mishaps were the traces of the low men.

Unless you are a true Stephen King fan and understand his work,

I would not recommend this book at all. His use of wording to

characterize went a little overboard along with the repetition of the

war. His style of writing became so boring at times that it was almost

unbearable to keep my eyes on the page. I truly believe his work could

have been better, Stephen should stick to the horror he is associated

with.
