Another thing that I have to overcome was to the idea that I have to adapt myself to a new culture and a new environment. I would have to learned to used public transportation, to adapt myself to a new climate, to new rules and especially I have to find myself a job to help my father with the expenses. I thought that the only way to overcome all these was to keep my eyes open in order to have path clear toward my education even though this path has not always been clear.


So if I sow all these unclear path in my life why did I remain in this country and didn’t went back to the Dominican Republic? The answer is simple , through the path of my education I sow that in this country I was going to have a better chance to success even though I have to overcome all these struggles in my life. I don’t regret my father decision bringing us to this country because he made the right decision. I didn’t also wanted to disappoint my father because he had made many sacrifices by raising and educating fourth children by himself as a single parent. That was one of the thing that keep my going because I wanted to give my father the opportunity to see me graduated from high school and now from college. Maintaining my expectation, my father expectation, working full time and attending school full time also was not easy, but it gave me the satisfaction proud of myself and to prove myself that with hard work and perseverance everything is possible event though we million of obstacle in the way.

Since I was in elementary school my dream was to go to college and enroll in a program that allowed me to help others in different ways. That’s why when I graduated from high school I decided to enroll in the Psychology program. I knew that Psychology would give the opportunity to explorer different behavior that we as human have and don’t know about. During my undergraduate studies I was given the opportunity to worked as a counselor at The Community Education Center at City College. I was very glad to worked with these adults and teenagers and try to figure out their problems about family and education.


I also volunteer in a chiropratic clinic were they treat personal injured. I volunteer as a translator because many of people that were treated there didn’t speak any English. I was very gratified because I was helping people that have the same problem that I have when I came to this country , the language.
