King John

King John was the last of the Angevin kings. John was the archetypical Angevin, the autocratic ruler of a vast territory. His story is a story of failure. The purpose of this report is to show how John rose to power, and what he did to lead his subjects to impose the Magna Carta.

John was the fourth son of Henry II. His brothers were, Henry the Younger, Geoffrey, and Richard. John being the youngest of four meant that the expectations from his father were not as clear as was with his three older brothers. John was destined to be married and live off land from his father until the death of his oldest brother Henry the Younger in 118. Then Henry II began to use John in his plans. Henry the Younger’s death threw a problem into King Henry’s plans. Then Henry II began to use John in his plans. So to solve the problem Henry asked his son Richard to turn over his authority in Aquitaine to John. Eventually Henry forgot about his problems with Richard and worried more about his policy in Ireland. He knighted 18 year old John and sent him to Ireland with 00 knights and a treasury to take charge of the situation. The Irish eventually united against John. John ended up isolated and blocked by the locals. He was unable to pay his mercenaries and was forced to leave Ireland.

After Geoffrey died in a tournament and Henry’s relationship with Richard worsened, John became King Henry’s favorite. Henry still though, was keeping Richard the heir to the throne. He did however keep Richard guessing whether or not he would inherit the throne. The paranoia backfired when Richard united with Louis of France and declared war on Henry in 118.

John stabbed his father in the back and joined Richard. Henry died in 118.

Richard was crowned king months after Henry died. He named John the Count of Mortain and granted him lands in England. The new king also had enough respect for Johns trouble making tendencies to ban him from England for three years while he went on crusade. However, against Richards better judgement, his mother Eleanor went behind his back to allow John back into England. It was a huge mistake. John conspired against Richards regent, William Longchamp, and set himself up as King in all but name. A plot to divide up the Angevin empire between himself and the new French King, Philip Augustus, was only just prevented by his mother, when she intercepted him as he was about to take ship from Southampton. When Richard was imprisoned on his return from the crusades, by Duke Leopold of Austria, John again conspired with the French King to seize the kingdom. On Richards release John fled to France, but he was soon forgiven by his brother, who himself returned to France, where he died in 11. On his deathbed Richard named John as his heir, although by the law of primogeniture Arthur, the son of an older brother, Geoffrey, should have succeeded him. Johns coronation took place at Westminster Abbey in 11.

Johns energetic campaigning and diplomatic moves threw his opponents into a corner, and by May 100 he was able to negotiate the Treaty of Le Goulet with Philip of France. Having successfully secured his kingdom, John almost immediately proceeded to throw it away. In 100, he married Isabella of Angoulême, Hugh, the justiciary of Ireland’s 1-year-old fianc. John was deeply suspicious of the powerful position Hugh le Brun had built up for himself during 11, and the marriage of Isabella was but the first in a series of maneuvers designed to curb that power. John then took Hugh’s position away and gave it to Aymer dAngoulême, taking away all Hugh had worked so hard for. Also, he deprived Hughs brother Ralph of the county of Eu which Richard had given him in Normandy.

The Lusignans appealed to Philip for justice, who summoned John before his court as his vassal to give an account of himself in autumn 101. John refused to attend, on the grounds that the French court had no jurisdiction over the Duke of Normandy, but Philip replied that he was summoned as the Duke of Aquitaine, and in April 10 declared John a rebellious vassal, confiscating all his feoffs. With Philip on their side, the lords of Lusignan went into revolt.

Richard I, through careful diplomacy, had ringed Philip with Angevin allies among the princes and nobles of France, forcing the French king to fight a war on several fronts if he wanted to fight the Angevins. However, by 10, many of these allies had either gone on crusade or been won over to Philips side, leaving John isolated and alone. So John had no international allies but, apart from Poitou and Brittany, his internal territories were secure. As John raised an army in Normandy to fight Philip, Arthur and the Lusignans managed to trap Eleanor in the castle of Mirabeau, from where she sent a message to her son for aid. John sped south to surprise the rebels unprepared outside Mirabeau on 1 July 10. Not a single rebel escaped. John had captured over 00 knights and all the leaders of the rebellion, including Arthur and Hugh le Brun. Yet once again, he threw it all away by taking things too far. He dismissed the pleas of William and Aimeri, and treated his captives most cruelly, making sure that noblemen died of harsh conditions. Worst of all, John was involved in the murder of Arthur of Brittany. A rumor circulated that, drunk and possessed by the devil, John had killed Arthur with his own hands and thrown him into the bottom of a river. Horrified by Johns actions William and Aimeri rebelled. John now saw enemies on all sides.

John is best remembered not for the loss of France, but for signing the Magna Carta. He didn’t sign the Magna Carta as a sign of weak kingship. It was the exact opposite. It was a because of the Angevin collapse in France, it was started by the increasing tax demands imposed by the king in his efforts to finance his French expeditions. Johns thinking was not dominated by England, but by France.

Presently, in the world today only about four hundred million of the inhabitance follow Buddhism (What ). Buddhism is “the teachings of Buddha that life is permeated with suffering caused by desire, that suffering ceases when desire ceases, and that enlightenment obtained through right conduct, wisdom, and meditation releases one from desire, suffering, and rebirth” (Wordnet 1). According to the Buddha, it is up to each individual to take responsibility for his or her actions and for him or her to realize the truth for his or herself (What 16). Buddha’s followers believe if one acts wisely and according to the Buddha’s expectations ones life will be happier and more fulfilled. Buddhism has an extremely extensive and remarkable history; to comprehend Buddhism one must know the characteristics, beliefs, and the position Buddhism holds presently (What 16).

Buddhism began about ,500 years ago (What 1), in 450 BC by the teachings of the Buddha (Kingsfisher 58). Buddhism originated in Northeast India via a monk named Siddhartha, he who will accomplish Gautama, his clan name (Buddha 58). Siddhartha Gautama received the name Buddha defined as “enlightened one or awakened one”(Kingsfisher 58). The Buddha was also given the honorable titles Sakyamuni “sage of the Sakya clan (religious 1), and Bodhisattva, one who has reached personal enlightenment and chooses to be reborn and aid others in reaching enlightenment (What 46). The Buddha began to preach and express his modern and uplifting ways of thinking and life with the public in the rd century BC (Buddhism 5). The Buddha past in his early eighties in 48 BC after the passing of the Buddha it was hard to continue since nothing was written down (Buddhism 5).

Some may perform the customs of Buddhism but belong to a different religion (Academic 5). Contrary to some beliefs Buddhists do not believe in an all-powerful God who created the world and watches over it (What 18). The Buddha is not worshiped as a God, but as a human being who gained enlightenment, through his teachings and example others have the opportunity to reach personal enlightenment (What 18). When practicing Buddhism, tradition insists one refer to Buddha as divine and all-powerful, however Buddha never claimed divinity (Acay 1). Differing from alternative religions, salvation is not attained through Christ; one is required to seek personal salvation and diligence (Acay 1). Buddhism is the diagnosis of inside suffering, one diagnoses suffering by meditating, and reaching enlightenment (Acay 1).

Over time Buddhism was torn into two forms, commonly known as early Buddhism “the teachings of the elders” and late Buddhism “great vehicle” (Kingsfisher 6-6). The forms over time have also acquired the labels Theravada, early Buddhism and Mahayana, late Buddhism (Buddhism 5). The two main ways of Buddhism are split mainly due to Theravada being more conservative, and Mahayana being more diverse and liberal (Buddhism 5). Theravada is dominant in Sri Lanka, Burma, and Thailand, where as Mahayana is found mainly in Taiwan, Korea, and Japan (Buddhism 5). Besides the two chief forms of Buddha’s teachings, Theravada and Mahayana, there are three key types Chinese, Tibetan, and Japanese (Kingsfisher 64-65). Monks, nuns, and followers of Buddha’s set example operate Buddhism (What 17). Buddhist Monks who leave ones home and possessions in order to devout ones life to carry on the Buddhist traditions are titled devout Buddhists (What 8). Devout Buddhists are also labeled the monastic sangha or community of Buddhist monks known as bhikkhus (What 8). In Buddhism, the purpose of the monks is to “perform” the religion the nuns assist the monks, and the ordinary Buddhist followers attempt to reach personal enlightenment (What 8). Places of worship for a Buddhist are very open, one can follow through with the procedures in the comfort of their own home, or one could attend a monastery or temple (what 4). In the Buddhist temples and monasteries one is offered the chance to make offerings, chant uplifting spiritual messages, and listen to a Buddhist monk preach the ways of the Buddha (What 4). Also one should clasp their hands together in greeting then kneel and bow three times before the statue of the Buddha or Bodhisattava (What 4).

The four noble truths are the most significant of Siddhartha Gautama, Buddha’s teachings (What 15). The first of the four noble truths is “life is full of unhappiness”, the second is “unhappiness caused by greed”, thirdly “there is a way to end unhappiness”, last “the way to end unhappiness is the middle path” (What 15). The three jewels of Buddhism are one Buddha himself two dharma, Buddha’s teachings three sangha, the Buddhist community (What 15). The Buddha is known as the doctor, the dharma is the medicine, and the sangha is the nurse who gives the medicine to the patient, a starving Buddhist- one who is full of greed and wishes to reach enlightenment (what 16). The five precepts or promises are the set of guidelines set for members of the Buddhist religion to follow (What ). The first of the five promises is “not to harm or kill any living thing”, this makes Buddhists vegetarians, second “not to steal or take anything that isn’t freely given” (What ). The third of the five precepts is “to control sexual desire”, fourth “not to tell any lies”, and the fifth states, “not to drink or take drugs”, Buddhists perform the five precepts on a daily basis (What ). The middle or eightfold path stands for the eight spokes of the dharma (Buddha’s teachings) wheel, the steps are not separate, but work together to reach ultimate happiness (What 14). The first step of the eightfold path is “right understanding- of the Buddha’s teachings”, second is “right attitude- thinking kind thoughts”, third “right speech- not telling any lies or using angry words”, fourth “right action- not telling any lies”, fifth “right work- witch does not make others suffer” (What 14). The sixth step of the dharma wheel is “right effort- thinking before one acts”, seventh right mindfulness- “being alert and aware” and the eighth step is “right meditation- for a calm, focused mind” (What 14). The four noble truths, the three jewels of Buddhism, and the noble eightfold path are the three key points to make a Buddhist successful in reaching full personal enlightenment.

“Buddhism has the characteristics of what would be expected in a cosmic religion for the future it transcends a personal God, avoids dogmas and theology; it covers both the natural and the spiritual, and it is based on a religious sense aspiring form the experience of all things, natural and spiritual as a meaningful unity” Albert Einstein (Religious 1). Buddhism has played a central role in the spiritual, cultural and social life of the eastern world since 450 BC and is still continuing to be a strong influence (Religious 1). Currently in the twentieth century Buddhism upholds the spot of the fourth largest religion in the world, Buddhism lags behind Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism (Religious 1). Recently Buddhism had begun to spread to the West; also from India to central and Southeast Asia, China, Korea, and Japan, Buddhism is the predominant religious and philosophical system of much of Asia (Religious 1). Various details of the Buddhist faith are no doubt part legend; numerous were invented to attempt to clarify parts of the Buddhist religion without explanation, also to make stories more interesting so they would not be forgotten over time (Acay 1).

Cause of the disputes

The Bush administration accused China of a host of trade violations, including intellectual property theft and trade barriers.

Manufacturers complained about rampant piracy of intellectual property, forced transfer of technology from firms launching joint ventures in China, trade barriers and capital markets that are largely insulated from free-market pressures, Evans said.

Evans also announced the creation of a new Unfair Trade Practices Team inside the Commerce Department to address trade barriers that are costing American jobs, as well as two new posts - an assistant secretary for trade promotion and an assistant secretary for manufacturing.

The announcements made in September, 15th in Detroit followed a series of 0 round-table discussions his agency has held around the country examining problems in manufacturing, Since July 000, manufacturing companies have lost .7 million jobs.

During those meetings, no country raised more attention as a source of concern than China, Evans said.

He gave as one example the experience of the manufacturer of Wrigley chewing gum, which has a 70 percent share of the Chinese market. Evans said that a Wrigley official told him that the Chinese were violating the companys copyrights by selling pirated gum in the city of Guangzhou and had even gone so far as to copy the designs of the Wrigley distribution trucks and were now driving the same routes.

Thats not a pretty picture, said Evans, who accused the Chinese of failing to live up to commitments it made in December 001 when it joined the World Trade Organization. China said at the time that it would open up its distribution systems to foreign suppliers and allow foreign non-bank companies to offer auto loans to consumers in China.

Evans pledged that the Bush administration would aggressively target unfair trade practices wherever they occur. American manufacturers can compete against any countrys white collars and blue collars but we will not submit to competing against another countrys choke collars.

American manufacturers have complained that China is artificially keeping the Chinese currency undervalued by as much as 40 percent to make American products more expensive in China and other markets where U.S. goods compete against Chinese products.

Evans said the new Unfair Trade Practices Team would work within the departments International Trade Administration while a new assistant secretary for trade promotion would also serve as the director general of the agencys Foreign Commercial Service, which supplies U.S. embassies with Commerce officials whose job is to help American companies operate in various foreign countries.

Senator Joe Lieberman, a Democrat representing Connecticut, said the Bush administration was late in addressing the issue.?The Bush administrations attention to Chinas trade abuses is .5 million jobs late. Weve been hemorrhaging manufacturing jobs for the last 1/ years, he said.

Senator Charles Schumer, a Democrat representing New York, said the Bush administration should be supporting his legislation to impose across-the-board tariffs of 7.5 percent on Chinese imports to penalize the country for undervaluing its currency to gain competitive advantage against U.S. exports.

China has been a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for almost two years, but is still dragging its heels on fulfilling its WTO commitments. If it were a smaller economy, some of Chinas transgressions could be tolerated, but when the worlds fourth largest trading nation ignores its obligations, Chinas trading partners ought to act.

Till now, one thing is clear Bush administrations action is based on the belief that China will not change its behavior unless it faces credible prospects of retaliation. Therefore, persuading China to comply with its WTO obligations will take a combination of economic leverage and diplomatic pressure.

US Trade Barriers against China Textile Export

Therefore, the Bush administration is promising to further the cause of free trade by putting up barriers to trade. The U.S. Department of Commerce announced on November 18th that, at the request of American textile manufacturers, it will limit imports of Chinese-made brassieres, sleepwear and knit fabrics. (Based on the Section 01-- the 174 Trade Act)

Trade advocates immediately decried the decision, but the administration argues that the quotas will only restrict the growth of imports. And Republicans from textile states have said that they would not support future trade agreements unless the administration agreed to protect the industry.

When the time comes to vote on trade measures, though, its hardly clear that lawmakers from textile states will be forthcoming with their support. And if the president gets in the habit of protecting the nations least competitive industries, his credibility in trade talks will suffer.

Thats a major problem at a time when the United States is negotiating with other Western Hemisphere nations over the terms of a proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas. Pushing other nations to knock down barriers while putting new ones up in the United States amounts to telling the world, Do as I say, not as I do.

But even if President Bushs newest anti-trade measure doesnt provoke a trade war with China, its still a discouraging step.

Trade barriers are bad news for New Orleans and other port cities, which benefit from a free flow of goods around the world. Imported steel is one of the most important products that move through the Port of New Orleans, and the effect of tariffs has been dreadful. Steel, which normally represents about 40 percent of the cargo passing through the port, now accounts for only 5 percent.

Because no Chinese textiles pass through the Port of New Orleans, the quotas wont be nearly as damaging to the metro area as the steel tariffs have been.

Even so -- and even if textile quotas do temporarily improve the health of the domestic industry -- the consequences outweigh any benefits. One researcher calculates that government restrictions on the textile trade cost the average family of three, $400 to $500 a year. Those higher prices explain why retailers are up in arms about the new textile quotas.

Textile quotas may play well in textile states like North Carolina, just as the steel tariffs have shored up support for the president in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Kentucky. But these trade restrictions hurt the cause of free trade and the nation as a whole.

China’s Reponses

China has strongly protested plans by the United States to slap quotas on Chinese textile imports of dressing gowns and bras, accusing Washington of violating WTO principles of free trade.

The Chinese government expresses deep regret over this decision, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.

The American government ignored the strong opposition from the Chinese side, made such a recommendation, violating the World Trade Organizations principles of free trade, transparency and non-discrimination.

China threatened to take the issue to the rules-based global trade body.

The Chinese side retains the right to appeal to relevant agencies of WTO to protect the rights and interests of Chinese industries, the ministry said.

A ministry spokesman told AFP Chinese officials had cancelled a trip scheduled Wednesday to the US to meet soybean sellers.

The spat adds to a rising number of disputes between the two trading giants, as the US seeks to balance a 10 billion dollar trade deficit with China blamed on Beijing boosting its competitiveness by deliberately undervaluing its currency.

The new row erupted Tuesday as Washington announced quotas on Chinese textiles after finding a flood of subsidized imports has hurt US textile makers.

A US trade panel examining a complaint from the US textile industry called for safeguard relief against Chinese-made knit fabrics, dressing gowns and bras, the US Commerce Department said.

The move, which could limit the growth of Chinese imports to 7.5 percent annually, came under the provisions of Chinas accession agreement to the WTO.

But the ministry said the US measures did not fit the provision that allows the United States and other WTO members to impose temporary quotas in the event those imports are found to cause market disruption.

China did not explicitly threaten retaliatory measures, but said overall trade relations could be damaged.

China hopes the US will realize the negative impact the decision is bound to have on bilateral trade relations, the ministry said.

A group representing Chinese textiles manufacturers lambasted the US decision as completely wrong and arbitrary.

The China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles said the US textile sector had only itself to blame for slumping production.

It insisted Chinese manufacturers had nothing to do with the sharp increase in exports, saying the growth only underscored the changing nature of the industry.

The accusations of US domestic producers to Chinese textile exporters are fabricated, there is no factual foundation, it said.

One US industry group estimated that since 001 exports of dressing gowns from China have increased by 05 percent, bras by 8 percent and knit fabrics by 8,000 percent.

But the chamber argued China has become one of the USs bright spots in its textile exportation market and benefits much more from maintaining the fast growth of the market.

It further reminded Washington that Chinas textile imports from the US have grown sharply, surging 148 percent to 787 million in the first nine months of this year compared with the same period last year.

Given that the restrictions would be calculated in dollar values rather than volume, they would affect a fraction of the total textile trade between the two countries, which suggested the move was politically motivated.

The products affected have an annual export value of less than one billion dollars, so its unlikely there will be any substantial impact on Chinese textile exporters, said Li Zhixian, a textile analyst at Guotai Junan Securities.

The US government seems to be doing this more for political reasons than economic reasons.

In response, the dollar sunk to record lows against the euro in Tokyo, with the euro hitting 1.178 dollars.

Analysts attributed the slide to worries that the US move could open the door to other protectionist barriers.

So far, China has not threatened to retaliate. And while the Chinese government said it would reserve the right to seek relief from the World Trade Organization, the statement came from a Commerce Ministry spokesman rather than a policymaker. Beijing-watchers take this as a sign that, for now, Chinas leaders dont see the issue as a major one.

That reaction is far more muted than the outcry in Europe over the steel tariffs that President Bush imposed last year. After the WTO ruled last week -- as expected -- that the tariffs violate international trade rules, the European Union prepared $. billion worth of retaliatory tariffs on American products.

Conclusion

The trade barrier battle between China and US is hard to predict and if it can not be calmed down, it is not a good thing to both sides.

First of all, China has to admit that it gives the protection to certain departments and products violate the WTO accession agreement.

Secondly, the too aggressive action taken by US against China is not appropriate.

China’s trade surpluses with American and European countries first reflect China’s police of welcome to the foreign direct investment. It shows that China is not pushing trade protectionism. In addition, China’s opening degree is also manifested in its relatively low import tariff after joining WTO. Admittedly, it still can not qualify the standards of a WTO membership.

At last, I do agree that China need to cope with the fair trade competition. And speed up its reform of every social and economy aspect. A more open and free trade market between China and US is not only good for the American economy but also good for China. So, I believe the American’s push to China to speed up its opening process is necessary but it is also not wise to push too much and hurry. I think China and USA need more talk and cooperation at this point and achieve a win-win solution based on their common goal-boosting their own economies, is not impossible.

US Trade Barriers against China’s Export

Prepared by Jing Wang

Appendix

SUMMARY OF U.S.-CHINA BILATERAL WTO AGREEMENT

AGRICULTURE

The Agreement would eliminate barriers and increase access for U.S. exports across a broad range of commodities. Commitments include

?Significant cuts in tariffs that will be completed by January 004. Overall average for agricultural products will be 17.5 percent and for U.S. priority products 14 percent (down from 1 percent).

?Establishment of a tariff-rate quota system for imports of bulk commodities, e.g., wheat, corn, cotton, barley, and rice, that provides a share of the TRQ for private traders. Specific rules on how the TRQ will operate and increased transparency in the process will help ensure that imports occur. Significant and growing quota quantities subject to tariffs that average between 1- percent.

?Immediate elimination of the tariff-rate quota system for barley, peanut oil, sunflower-seed oil, cottonseed oil, and a phase-out for soybean oil.

?The right to import and distribute products without going through a state-trading enterprise or middleman.

?Elimination of export subsidies on agricultural products.

China has also agreed to the elimination of SPS barriers that are not based on scientific evidence.

INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS

China would lower tariffs and eliminate broad systemic barriers to U.S. exports, such as limits on who can import goods and distribute them in China, as well as barriers such as quotas and licenses on U.S. products.

TARIFFS

?Tariffs cut from an average of 4.6 percent to an average of .4 percent overall and 7.1 percent on U.S. priority products.

?China will participate in the Information Technology Agreement (ITA) and eliminate all tariffs on products such as computers, telecommunications equipment, semiconductors, computer equipment, and other high-technology products.

?In the auto sector, China will cut tariffs from the current 80-100% level to 5% by mid-006, with the largest cuts in the first years after accession.

?Auto parts tariffs will be cut to an average of 10% by mid-006.

?In the wood and paper sectors, tariffs will drop from present levels of 1-18% on wood and 15-5% on paper down to levels generally between 5% and 7.5%.

?China will also be implementing the vast majority of the chemical harmonization initiative. Under that initiative, tariffs will be at 0, 5.5 and 6.5 percent for products in each category.

RIGHT TO IMPORT AND DISTRIBUTE

Trading rights and distribution are among the top concerns for U.S. manufacturers and agricultural exporters. At present, China severely restricts trading rights (the right to import and export) and the ability to own and operate distribution networks. Under the Agreement, trading rights and distribution services will be progressively phased in over three years. China will also open up sectors related to distribution services, such as repair and maintenance, warehousing, trucking and air courier services.

China has made commitments to phase out most restrictions in a broad range of services sectors, including distribution, banking, insurance, telecommunications, professional services such as accountancy and legal consulting, business and computer related services, motion pictures and video and sound recording services. China will also participate in the Basic Telecommunications and Financial Services Agreements.

ANTIDUMPING AND SUBSIDIES METHODOLOGY

The agreed protocol provisions ensure that American firms and workers will have strong protection against unfair trade practices including dumping and subsidies. The U.S. and China have agreed that we will be able to maintain our current antidumping methodology (treating China as a non-market economy) in future anti-dumping cases. This provision will remain in force for 15 years after Chinas accession to the WTO. Moreover, when we apply our countervailing duty law to China we will be able to take the special characteristics of Chinas economy into account when we identify and measure any subsidy benefit that may exist.

PRODUCT-SPECIFIC SAFEGUARD

The agreed provisions for the protocol package also ensure that American domestic firms and workers will have strong protection against rapid increases of imports.

?To do this, the Product-Specific Safeguard provision sets up a special mechanism to address increased imports that cause or threaten to cause market disruption to a U.S. industry. This mechanism, which is in addition to other WTO Safeguards provisions, differs from traditional safeguard measures. It permits United States to address imports solely from China, rather than from the whole world, that are a significant cause of material injury through measures such as import restrictions. Moreover, the United States will be able to apply restraints unilaterally based on legal standards that differ from those in the WTO Safeguards Agreement. This could permit action in more cases. The Product-Specific Safeguard will remain in force for 1 years after China accedes to the WTO.

TEXTILES

Chinas protocol package will include a provision drawn from our 17 bilateral textiles agreement, which permits U.S. companies and workers to respond to increased imports of textile and apparel products. This textile safeguard will remain in the effect until December 1, 008, which is four years after the WTO agreement on Textile and Clothing expires.

My Personal Learning Style Profile

My best time for learning is in the morning. After I complete my routine morning rituals, I’m energetic and ready to start the day. I feel best when I can schedule my learning time two hours after I awake and late afternoon right before and after dinner. Below is an example of my peak and valley learning times.

I’m a grouper. I like to learn from top to bottom. I like to see the broad picture and add the details later. I like to visualize the end result(s) of the new topic or subject first.

Once I have a good mental picture in my mind, the details, such as how much do I know about this topic or subject, what can I contribute, and what resources can I turn to, to achieve those results start to add to the broad picture. After mind mapping the project with the details, I like to write it all down and map it out on paper before I jump right into it. Many times I have started new projects with very little information and knowledge of the topic or subject and the end results were very successful. For example, my employer asked me to accept the task of administering the close out procedures for a Shopping Center we built in Kapolei last year. This is a very detailed and important task that is a Contract requirement to the Developers and Architects of the project. The secretary on the project had to take an emergency leave of absence and had no time to train. I had no previous experience or knowledge of how to do this close out however, I was confident that I could perform this task and the Company believed I could as well. As I dove right into this task, I never once thought that I couldn’t do it. I remember feeling a little overwhelmed but only because I wasn’t familiar with how the procedure worked or even how to proceed. I immediately made some calls for some guidelines and was told to follow the project specifications, which were very vague. The Project Manager wasn’t familiar at all with the administrative close out procedures and was of no help to me. So I was on my own. I turned to the project specifications manual for guidance and instruction. About a month later, I successfully turned over close out manuals and other required documents to the Owners that were previously reviewed and approved by the Architect. I was so proud of myself for that achievement. I am now the official close out person for Metcalf and as a result of that learning experience, I received a raise.

I generally like to learn through people and feelings; therefore, my preference(s) to approach a new subject are through feelings, tuition and emotions more so than jotting down every detail. I like to get feedback from others who have experience on the new subject so that I can get a feel for what the subject is about.

My two strongest intelligences are Musical and Intrapersonal. I enjoy learning most when I’m allowed the freedom to be creative.

I do a lot of projects at work that require me to create spreadsheets and other types of tracking documents and, I have the freedom to be creative there. I love it.

I can recall a time when my employer, at the last minute, asked me to attend and represent the Company at a public relations function that was apparently schedule a month and a half in advance, the boss just forgot to put something together for it. I had one full day to put this project together. I learned that there was a 10-foot table and a 14’ x 14’ space reserved in a ballroom at Fort Shafter for us. Now I had to fill the space with Company advertisements, banners, and anything I could think of to promote the Company. I was very excited and very motivated to take on this task. My creative mind went right to work.

I immediately went to purchase all the supplies I needed to create charts, boards, business card holder, etc. By the end of the next day, everything was done. The General Manager and I met at the ballroom at Fort Shafter just in time to set up our displays. We had a great time and it was a big success.

The General Manager gave me a letter of appreciation the next day and I had yet another great learning experience. This is my new motto now. “I love learning!”.

An Annalization of "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky"

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like An Annalization of "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky" even at the eleventh hour. The story The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky, written by Stephen Crane, is a unique look at the old west and persents a different way of storytelling. Instead of focusing on the hero alone, Crane puts the Bride in the title to emphasise the importance of her role in the story. There is also an unusual ending to the story, setting it apart from stereotypical western stories. There is too, sybmolism in the story that makes it unique in its genre.

The last sentence of the story has far more significance than perhaps is concived at first glance. This very unique ending plays many roles in the final mood of the story, and resolves the major conflicts very quickly. When analized closely, it is noticable that the ending is ironic, in the story and for the story. This means that in the story, the sentence sums up the ironic fact that Scratchy has been defeated, and not by the sword, persay... but by the woman. The sentence also creates an ironic ending for the story, as it is an abrupt ending, contraditcing the expected outcome of a shootout or fight of sorts. Instead, the hero raises not a hand, and the villan surrenders without putting up a fight. By using the unique, desrciptive ending that Crane does, emphasizing the unexpectedness of the outcome with funnel-shaped tracks (67), it brings out the irony that the excitment and anticipation the story has geared up is then just shot down, with no shots fired at all!

This last sentence, while creating the irony it does, and perhaps putting a sort of downer on the ending, also resolves the story abruptly, yet effectivly. The two main conflicts are that of Jack, worried about the worlds view on his ability to carry out his duties now that he is married, and that of Scratchy, who is out to shoot up the town, and anyone in his path, especially Jack. The last sentence concludes the fact that the conflict between Jack and Scratchy is over, and Scratchy is defeated, and also concludes that Jack is still the boss, which is what he worried about throughout the story.

The role of each character in a story is very important, though each characters idea of their own role may not be the same as other characters. For instance, Jack sees his role as the town sherrif, though the Bride, and now Scratchy, see him as the husband. With more of the story having been written, we probably would have seen that the people of the town shared Jacks view of his role as the sherrif. The Bride sees herself differently that others as well. She, having come from a different setting with a different role before she got married, feels out of place, while Jack has more confidence in her, and sees her simply as his wife, and not the cook. It was quite apparent that she had cooked, and that she expected to cook, dutifully (618).

So the way each character views their own role determines much of the way they carry it out. And the idea that the other characters have of another characters role determines quite a bit of how they interact with them. We see this in the final section of the story, when Scratchys determined idea of Jacks being the sheriff is torn down and replaced with his realization of Jack as a married man. The difference, even if only in his mind, is drastic, and completly changes the way he interacts with Jack, as we see when he stands down and walks away.

In this story, the glittering parlor car symbolizes the change in the Brides life. It contrasts with her plain, underclass countenance (618) and represents her new life as a wife instead of a cook. But it also creates a mood of anxiety or worry. The Bride is not yet comfortable in her new lifestyle and role, and she projects it outside and inside. Inside, she views other people as judging her, making her nervous, and therefore, on the outside, she looks misplaced, as she twisted her head to regaurd her puff sleeves... They embarrassed her (618).

I expected the town of Yellow Sky to be more stereotypical. But as we see with Scratchy, for instance, he is not quite the typical bad guy. This is shown in a comic way when he tried to hit the paper that he knives to the door, and misses, curses, and walks away. Also, Scratchy unexpectedly gives up the fight when he discovers that Jack is married. Cranes characters fit into the town because they fit together with themselves. Each one has a place, or role, and they carry it out without conflicting with anothers role. Written by Royce

In our lives we meet many people. Some we remember and call our friends, others pass and are called acquaintances. Yet those who instill a lasting impression of their support and confidence in us will always be, a companion. I was lucky enough to have had a person like this in my life to assist in showing me my true potential.

Charlene Farley was more than a family friend to me; she shared the same interests and ideals as I did. Char was a strong independent woman who knew that wherever her life took her, she would be able to adjust. She had been married and divorced twice, owned and managed a company, and always made sure she was a mother to her four children. She reached out to my family whenever we were in a predicament that seemed to have no solution.

She was the accountant for her company and loved math. While I was on my way to a new town, Channahon, and on to junior high. Our new house was not completely finished when our old house was sold, so Char insisted we stay with her. At that point Char was past being a friend; she was like a second mother to me. She always made sure her kids, myself included, had finished their homework before anything else.

When I transferred, I was supposed to be placed in a higher level of Science, English, and Math. The new junior high only offered the subjects English and Math in a higher level. At this new junior high I was not recommended to take those classes even with my transcripts so I was placed in regular. After a couple of months fighting for it I was accepted in to the higher math, Pre-Algebra, but not the English. The one problem I had was that I was now almost a month behind in learning the material the rest of the kids had already learned. The first day of my new class I was given all of the necessary material to teach myself and catch up, but these were things I had never seen before. When I got home that day I showed Char, knowing her excellence in math and she taught me up to and beyond what I needed to know for class in two days. From then on every night at dinner we would discuss my math class, and she was my personal teacher for when I did not understand something.

After we moved out and I began eighth grade, my family and I were shocked to find out that Char had been diagnosed with emphazema. Yet, by looking at her you would never tell. Her perspective on life did not change after she found out, and she did not expect to be treated differently because of her diagnosis. She remained strong while others crumbled to the horrendous news, and she insisted on doing things that most thought she could not. We still had our conversations about math, and she always finished it with, “You’re a smart boy, and even without me you will be a master mathematician.”

To this day I excel in math and always try my best in all I do. I thank Char everyday for helping me to see my full potential and for teaching me math. For her I will become the greatest of mathematicians and the best at what I choose to do. My companion Char lost her battle with cancer my sophomore year in high school. She is missed dearly and will never be forgotten.

Discuss nature and relevance of ‘imitation’ to Aristotle’s Poetics and Stanislavsky’s An Actor Prepares.

Aristotle found the idea of imitating reality morally intrusive. He defined the difference between the arts and broke them down into separate components. These components can be separated into six; Firstly, imitation within a tragedy plot, which is the larger and higher form of art which began as improvisation and then moved into a a broader scope with more actors. Character’s are another component, in so far as you need someone to act out the plot. Thought, whereby ‘something is proved to be or not to be, or a general maxim is enunciated.” Diction is also a component this refers to the language and the meaning of what is being said. Finally the spectacle which deals with sets, costumes, masks etc. Aristotle was an empiricist, he theorised on what was going around him, it is also fair to say that he was a materialist, presenting life as it was lived. In his book the “Poetics’” the layout is simple and effective and makes up what appears to be a series of lecture notes, examining different forms of poetry.

Constantin Stanislavsky in his book ‘An Actor Prepares’ shows through practical examples and demonstrations his theory of acting. His method was based on the idea that all action is to be carried out with intention and must be justified. Comparisons have been drawn between Aristotle and Stanislavsky for the following reasons; they both have the same objective which is to achieve a naturalistic and true to life performance and they both encourage emotional responses. Aristotle and Stanislavsky wanted actors to relate to their characters, however their approaches differed. Aristotle wanted actors and indeed the audience to relate through the plot whereas Stanislavsky wasn’t overly concerned with plot but wanted relation to be drawn through strong characterisation.

There is a long history of imitation in both human and animal behaviours, dating as far back as the nineteenth century. Charles Darwin, collected some examples of what he thought to be imitation in animals, however he did not define what was meant by imitation. Thorndike (188), was perhaps the first to offer a clear definition of what imitation was, he writes “learning to do an act from seeing it done.” Thorndike’s definition captures the idea that in imitation a new behaviour is learned by copying it from a predecessor.

“First the instinct of imitation is implanted in to man from childhood... He is the most imitative of living creatures and through imitation learns his earliest lessons.” This idea presented to us by Aristotle is interesting, he believed that imitation is a part of human nature and is necessary for learning especially within the art of theatre acting and that human beings have an innate desire for knowledge. He thought pleasure could derive from learning something familiar, something thats already depicted in one way or another. This notion can be carried forward and applied to Stanislavsky’s technique of acting. Imitation after all is an understanding, a way of connecting yourself with a subject. This is the basis of Stanislavsky’s theory and the inter linking factor between these two theorists. Stanislavsky discovered that theatre need not be trivial, it was, and still is a way that life can be examined. “Take nothing for granted. Think of your own experiences and use them truthfully.”

“Every invention of the actors imagination must be thoroughly worked out and solidly built on a basis of facts.” The familiarity of imitation gathered over an actors life is the foundation of these “facts” that Stanislavsky discusses here. His theory relies heavily on an actor becoming their character, feelings and actions much be internal as well as external. The actor must use “emotional memory” to arouse thoughts and feelings, in order to give a full performance. The actor tries to connect the characters situation with important events in his own life. This connection can make the character’s display of emotion on stage seem realistic and instant. One of Stanislavsky’s most effective ways of getting the actor to relate and internalise the character is the notion of the “magic if”. This is Stanislavsky’s term for the door that allows the actor to enter the emotional life of the character. According to Stanislavsky if one could master the “magic if’” then it would ensure a true life and naturalistic performance. However it is important to note that the actor may not always have the emotional memory required for a certain part, therefore they must draw upon the idea of imitation. Perhaps by recalling something they have seen on television or in a film, or through recollecting an experience that someone they know went through.

Aristotle feels that tragedy is “An imitation of an a action that is serious, complete and of a certain magnitude,” Shakespeare’s Hamlet is an excellent example of this. The play centres around Hamlet’s search for revenge after his father’s death, this is a “serious” action. The play is “complete” in so far as its events, are concluded in a believable and sensible manner. Hamlet gains revenge by killing his uncle. Hamlet also follows Aristotle’s ideas in terms of being of a “certain magnitude.” The characters are meant to appear to the audience as fully rounded, visions of perfection, but still real enough to relate to. Although Hamlet, is a wealthy prince, he deals with the same issues as the everyday man. He’s confused, paranoid and angered over his father’s death. The audience relates to these common feelings and associates a certain amount of empathy with Hamlet.

Aristotle’s idea of cathartic activity, is employed by Shakespeare to instil pity and fear in his audience. Hamlet suffers “unmerited misfortune” because his father’s death came about suddenly. Adding to Hamlet’s despair his mother has married his uncle, who he suspects killed his father. Diction according to Aristotle is another component that makes the tragedy ever more believable. The character’s speak as they should, the king sounds like a king, which is juxtaposed by the common manner in which the gravedigger’s speak. Hamlet is what Aristotle considered a complex plot.

Aristotle wrote that the most convincing portrayals of anger and distress, for example, were achieved best by performers who truthfully felt those emotions at the moment that they expressed them. He notes that finding the true feeling in the proper time on stage is the key part to a successful performance. Stanislavsky agrees with this idea, “you must live in the passions and in the types. Your acting of them must grow out of your living in them.” Stanislavsky knew there were no shortcuts to truthfulness. After the actor has gathered all the external facts about a character and used his imagination to feel what it’s like to live as that character. Yet there is still the larger issue of understanding the human condition. To gain this the rules are relevant but the process is essential.

Imitation is not only relevant but a central value to both theorists. These theories are interesting because they are informed by reality, but go on to coexist in a fictional world.

Ashley Shurow

Elkins Casinos

There seems to be no question that, at least in the short term, the spread of video lottery

has been profitable from a business standpoint. In the first year of operation of these machines,

under the Limited Video Lottery Act of 001, revenues exceeded projected figures, with sales of

$46 million. By the end of the 00 fiscal year, those sales are expected to top $170 million, a

70% increase.

These machines are profitable not only for the state, but for small business owners as well.

One local Elkins bar owner, after holding out on a welcome to the machines, recently added them.

When asked why in a recent article in the Inter-Mountain, he stated the obvious “They’re

profitable.”

Not only are established businesses profiting from these machines, but they’re also

creating a market for establishments catering specifically to video gaming. In Elkins alone,

several of the new wave of chain “casinos” have opened over the last few months.

So, from a business standpoint, video gambling seems to be paying off. But, what of the

people playing the games? Some politicians look to the economic and social consequences faced

by these people. Senator Sarah Minear recently stated, “I think the people that play the machines

are the ones that can least afford it.”

What ethical responsibility should the state government take? Governments seem to

legislate morality, until they can profit from it. The state is getting its cut from the profits, then

taxing the profits made on the machines by the businesses housing the machines and the vendors

that tend them at the rate of 8% to 5%.

Even from a sheer profitability standpoint, we’re yet to see what economic impact these

machines will have in the long run. Senator Minear said of video gaming, “It creates a financial

hardship on the families which will ultimately be on the state and taxpayers.”

In the short term, some are profiting (some very much so), and some (the gamblers who

can’t afford it) are not. It will be interesting to see what will happen from social and economic

standpoints over the years to come.

Hypocrisy on Wall Street

“Greed is a fat demon with a small mouth and whatever you feed it is never enough,” a quote by Janwillem van de Wetering points out the unnecessary evil of greed itself, as it can never be fed. Just as Bud Fox keeps asking Gordon Gekko, “How much is enough?” The answer is, there never is. Greed is the bottomless pit that has enveloped not only a fictitious character in the movie Wall Street, but also even America’s little “Suzy Homemaker”, Martha Stewart.

Martha and Gordon Gekko are both prominent in the corporate business world. It is the hot seat for the root of evil, as it has already been mentioned, greed. Once “success” has been tasted, it never tires, as everyone wants more. “Success” being the one with the most money wins, but there is no money, it instead is the ongoing battle for who can report with the most gains, and claim that it’s “mine… all mine!”

Today, Martha may be meeting her very own demise. As the public eye finds that she seems to have been tossing more than salad, and her billion-dollar empire could possibly tumble down because of her stock selling timetable. Ironically it resembles Wall Street’s Gordon Gekko. As they seem to both hold the mentality “Nobody knows except us.” Quite, but you fail to remember an organization that would like to call themselves the SEC, formally known as the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The SEC officially indicts and charges both Martha and Gekko on the fact that the greedy wench and scumbag attempted to cheat the system by using confidential information not available to the public, hence securing an unfair advantage in buying securities. What they did is called “Insider Trading” and what it is, is illegal! Not only do these two get and react to “Insider Trading” they lie about it. In an attempt to safeguard them they throw up their hands and put on their sweetest smile, rather they should throw out their hands and be prepared for handcuffs. They have violated the law and the ethical trading standards, which are to be abided by everyone, and now they shall pay. As their empires crumble and wither away before their eyes we can only hope that the guilt of greed eats away at their heartless minds.

It is when people that are not only well known, but also even respected break the bonds of common trust in society that it erodes consumer confidence in the stock market. Instantaneously when insider trading is found out, the business or businesses involved lose money. For example, “Martha Stewart Omnimedia” lost approximately $400 million dollars ever since the criminal investigation began. Consumer confidence had been lost and it had paid its toll.

Common consumers don’t want to put their hard earned money into hands that could diminish their investment. It is already a risk to invest in the stock market, but the risk increases when “Wall Street sharks”- the rich and corporate raiders are now seen as predators and cheats. When trust is broken, the unfair advantage causes a domino effect of events and the costs outweigh the benefits as the infrastructure diminishes. As the public now views a value system that places money above anything else, the only thing to be seen is greed. Greed has corrupted and viciously destroyed our familiar morality.

My life experience has made me realize that injustice and suffering in the world are too widespread to be solved through volunteer activity. Consequently, I want to attack the roots of these problems and play a more substantial role in the defense of defenseless victims. This is why I am attracted to the law.

The legal profession will draw upon my interest in social justice and give me the chance to aid individuals by offering legal advice. I learned through my course of life that there is no better feeling than to be treated equally. I now want to apply this lesson to the law. At first, my practice may only help one person at a time. Eventually, I hope to impact entire communities, cities, and even states.

In terms of career aspirations, I wish to spend a few years after passing the bar practicing law to gain practical experience and to help individuals directly. After that, I want to direct my energies toward teaching the law, since I believe this is the best way to impact the future of society. A single lawyer can help some, but a law professor can inspire generations of jurists to pursue social justice.

My study of the law, and my interest in applying it toward social justice, will be informed by my knowledge of the Eastern Europe law. My life experiences and the lives of every human across the world who is treated unequally, will give me a better perspective on the global implications of my work and will allow me to see how national laws influence the entire world community in the age of globalization.

While I cannot hope to affect as much change as great humanitarian figures have done, I nonetheless feel an obligation to try. By studying law and by using it to address social ills across the globe, I will contribute to a society that is more equitable tomorrow than it is today. As a law school student, I look forward to sharing my experiences with my classmates and to learning the skills that will help me help others.

Please accept my admission request and give me the opportunity to be part of your institution. Give me the opportunity to continue my education in the land of liberty, as for liberty is what my nation is suffering for. Give me the chance for one day to protect every one in need with professionalism, by having learned from the best.

I’m looking forward to learn from you, hopefully we can both learn from each other.

THE ROLE OF ICT

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like THE ROLE OF ICT even at the eleventh hour. The matter is that we posses the greatest base of expert writers. Our staff of freelance writers includes approximately 300 experienced writers are at your disposal all year round. They are striving to provide the best ever services to the most desperate students that have already lost the hope for academic success. 1. ICT systems which are used in airports are for computerised passenger and baggage handling systems. If these were to fail it would prove to be catastrophic, as customers would have to have their flights cancelled or delayed.

If a system in an organisation, such as an insurance company were to have an IT system failure then it would cost them. They would lose custom, as databases of different insurance policies would not be available to sell to the customer.

. Social impacts of introducing computerised information systems into business organisations it would create employment. The reason being because is teleworking were to be introduced, it would create more flexible hours for parents to work. If teleworking was introduced then people who have other commitments, such as picking and dropping off children at school, can do these things and still work at home for an organisation.

nd impact to society

An impact to the business of introducing computerised information systems such as teleworking, would be that they do not have costs building/office space to pay. As employees would be working from home, office space would not be required, therefore cutting the organisation’s costs.

nd impact to the business

. Teleworking provides many different advantages and disadvantages to the employee and the organisation. The advantages to individuals of teleworking

· Workers can work better in a quiet environment at home rather than in a noisy office. For example, if the office is an open plan layout then the environment will be a lot nosier to work in. However, if they were working from home they may find it very beneficial, as it would be quiet for you to work in.

· Workers enjoy greater flexibility, and can arrange their working hours around other commitments they may have. For example, the employee might have to drop and pick up their children from school. If they are working from home this will be easier to do. If the individual is not working from home, commitments such as picking and dropping off children can be hard as most organisations require the employee to start work at a particular time.

· Travel costs - as there will be little need for the teleworker to commute to and from the office, this will thankfully reduce the expenditure on travelling arrangements, whether it be via car, train, bus or another means of transportation, and especially for those with children.

The disadvantages to the employee

· The lack of socialisation - with so many of the employees working away from the office, and in a confined area, there is little chance to meet new people through their line of work. This is why the people who telework often do not have the chance to socialise. One of the best places for socialisation is in fact the office, here you will meet new people and will manage to make many friends, so when working at home the process of socialisation is smaller, and the less people you will get to know.

· Finding the correct atmosphere to work in - When working at home one of the most essential aspects is to establish an area where you can work efficiently, an area that is quiet and can be set up for your Teleworking needs, i.e. desk and other relevant furniture. A lot of Teleworkers surprisingly have extensions built to their homes so that they can Telework in their own little environment away from all the hassles at home.

· Distractions - although it is correct to find the correct environment in which to work there will still always be distractions. Whether it is people outside your house digging whilst laying new phone lines or your own young children when they return from school. Here it is important to adjust to the environment and make sure that any little distraction does not distract you. There will always be time to see your children, this is why many teleworkers take a couple of hours off of work when their children return from school.

The advantages to the employer

· Employers can recruit people from a much wider geographical area.

· Saves money - with all of the employees teleworking the company has no need for an office, with this in mind there is little need for the company to own and rent an office space. Not only does it saves costs on rent bills but also on provisions, such aspects as desks, chairs, space, heating, car parking space. As well as canteen food, and beverages which are consumed on a daily basis.

The disadvantages to the employer

· Productivity - Although now computers are capable of monitoring how much progress is made whilst teleworking, it still gives a small indication of the actual progress. Employers are concerned with how much progress the employees are actually making. The only way they can keep an eye on them is in the office, as they are not in the office the only way that the employer can monitor employees is by the progress of their work. They can also use this with the indication from the computers to determine who is the most successful of the teleworking employees.

Advantages to society pollution in the environment falls, as there are fewer cars on the road because more employees are working from home.

Disadvantage the NHS bill could increase as employees are exercising less because they are working from home.

4. Professional progression within the ICT industry requires more than just technical skills. Other necessary skills that are required include having good communication skills, good interpersonal skills and a good understanding of the industry, standards and acting as a professional.

· Communication skills are needed so that employers and employees can effectively communicate with each other.

· Interpersonal skills are needed to help and organisation’s progression, as it would help employees to work in a team. If employees have good interpersonal skills it would help teams to work harder and make the organisation more successful.

· A good understanding of an industry is needed so individuals can help the progression by working to improve. Individuals and teams could try and fill niches in the market to progress further.

Maria Theresa

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Maria Theresa even at the eleventh hour. Many great events have happened throughout time. One of which I would have wanted to witness was when Frederick II [more commonly known as Frederick the Great] invaded the lands belonging to the Hapsburgs. When he became King of Prussia in 1740, Frederick to conquer Austria’s iron-rich land of Silesia, among others.

I believe it would have been an exceptionally captivating incident to observe during Maria Theresa’s reign as Austria’s new successor as the Hapsburg monarch. During the times of great anguish and combat, the youthful queen remained composed and in control. The Prussian army attacked and occupied Silesia during December of 1740, thus commencing the War of Austrian Succession. After Prussia’s actions, other countries also hurdled to take advantage of Maria Theresa’s conjectural weakness. Although just having given birth to her first son, Maria Theresa was swift to take action. Nevertheless, she journeyed across Austria to the Hungarian lands rightfully hers. Maria Theresa held her infant son before an assembly of Hungarian nobles, most of which who were not particularly forthcoming to their Hapsburg rulers. She delivered an exceedingly rousing speech that immediately won over the surly assembly. The Hungarians arranged to give Maria Theresa an army of 100,000 men. With the assistance of Great Britain, Russia and the Dutch Netherlands, Maria Theresa and her armies managed to impede Prussia and its allies from overtaking Austria and the other Hapsburg lands. Although Silesia was unable to be spared by Austrian rule, and was lost completely in the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, Maria Theresa proved to be a wonderful leader in a time of suffering and hostilities.

I chose this event because much can be learned from the experiences that Maria Theresa faced. Most would believe Maria Theresa to be a feeble monarch, primarily because she was female, but Maria Theresa was far from weak. Although she had a young son, this did not stop her from helping her country and taking charge when she was needed. She showed strong character and was quick to know what was necessary to overthrow the powers of Frederick II and his armies.

Maria Theresa was a wonderful monarch of the Hapsburg dynasty, and she never let her resistance down. Even though countless great events have happened throughout history, I believe that the War of Austrian Succession, won for the most part by Austria, would have been an incredible event to be present at, to see the powerful actions taken by the Hapsburg monarch of Austria, Maria Theresa.
