The cop confronted the protagonist, “You’re making people nervous. You don’t fit the profile of the neighborhood”(15). The author captures the moral of the story in this one statement. An innocent man, driving around in a neighborhood that he didn’t “fit the profile” should not be grounds for people to call the police.

China has strongly protested plans by the United States to slap quotas on Chinese textile imports of dressing gowns and bras, accusing Washington of violating WTO principles of free trade.
The Chinese government expresses deep regret over this decision, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.
The American government ignored the strong opposition from the Chinese side, made such a recommendation, violating the World Trade Organizations principles of free trade, transparency and non-discrimination.
China threatened to take the issue to the rules-based global trade body.
The Chinese side retains the right to appeal to relevant agencies of WTO to protect the rights and interests of Chinese industries, the ministry said.
A ministry spokesman told AFP Chinese officials had cancelled a trip scheduled Wednesday to the US to meet soybean sellers.
The spat adds to a rising number of disputes between the two trading giants, as the US seeks to balance a 10 billion dollar trade deficit with China blamed on Beijing boosting its competitiveness by deliberately undervaluing its currency.
The new row erupted Tuesday as Washington announced quotas on Chinese textiles after finding a flood of subsidized imports has hurt US textile makers.
A US trade panel examining a complaint from the US textile industry called for safeguard relief against Chinese-made knit fabrics, dressing gowns and bras, the US Commerce Department said.
The move, which could limit the growth of Chinese imports to 7.5 percent annually, came under the provisions of Chinas accession agreement to the WTO.
But the ministry said the US measures did not fit the provision that allows the United States and other WTO members to impose temporary quotas in the event those imports are found to cause market disruption.
China did not explicitly threaten retaliatory measures, but said overall trade relations could be damaged.
China hopes the US will realize the negative impact the decision is bound to have on bilateral trade relations, the ministry said.
A group representing Chinese textiles manufacturers lambasted the US decision as completely wrong and arbitrary.
The China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles said the US textile sector had only itself to blame for slumping production.
It insisted Chinese manufacturers had nothing to do with the sharp increase in exports, saying the growth only underscored the changing nature of the industry.
The accusations of US domestic producers to Chinese textile exporters are fabricated, there is no factual foundation, it said.
One US industry group estimated that since 001 exports of dressing gowns from China have increased by 05 percent, bras by 8 percent and knit fabrics by 8,000 percent.
But the chamber argued China has become one of the USs bright spots in its textile exportation market and benefits much more from maintaining the fast growth of the market.
It further reminded Washington that Chinas textile imports from the US have grown sharply, surging 148 percent to 787 million in the first nine months of this year compared with the same period last year.
Given that the restrictions would be calculated in dollar values rather than volume, they would affect a fraction of the total textile trade between the two countries, which suggested the move was politically motivated.
The products affected have an annual export value of less than one billion dollars, so its unlikely there will be any substantial impact on Chinese textile exporters, said Li Zhixian, a textile analyst at Guotai Junan Securities.
The US government seems to be doing this more for political reasons than economic reasons.
In response, the dollar sunk to record lows against the euro in Tokyo, with the euro hitting 1.178 dollars.
Analysts attributed the slide to worries that the US move could open the door to other protectionist barriers.
So far, China has not threatened to retaliate. And while the Chinese government said it would reserve the right to seek relief from the World Trade Organization, the statement came from a Commerce Ministry spokesman rather than a policymaker. China hopes the US will realize the negative impact the decision is bound to have on bilateral trade relations, the ministry said.

Rather, in this practice tickets are drawn from “the black box” to determine which of the village people was next to be stoned to death. The protagonist of this story, Tessie, ends up being the victim to this lottery, at which point her previously “positive” approach to this ritual changes to a more negative standpoint.
In “Totem,” King takes a slightly different approach on the matter of tradition. This story is centered around a Canadian museum/art gallery, which is dealing with a strange issue where totems keep re-appearing and disrupting the peace. All measures the museum takes to eliminate this problem are futile. There is an evident connection with the totems and native population of Canada. The totems show constant resistance when the museum workers try to be rid of them, hollering and crying louder as though becoming more infuriated with each attempt at removing them. Eventually they are left to be undisturbed.
To be critical of history would be to question the things one does frequently as tradition, and decide whether these traditions, in fact, have any important basis. Traditions are any kind of teaching, written or spoken, handed down from generation to generation. In “The Lottery” as previously stated, the people are not critical of their history, because they don’t question the traditions they partake in. The village in “The Lottery” is so keen on maintaining and upholding their sacred practices that they do so without even any thought. This is made most obvious by the text; “The people had done it so many times that they only half listened to the directions” (). In “Totem,” however, the people at the museum are also not critical of history because they don’t question the traditions of their Country’s past. The author uses a play on irony that shows how in a Canadian historical museum, that with the most historic significance, namely the totems, is shunned upon by the museum workers. The characters in both short stories simply go about their business doing as told without any further thought, but both are on opposite ends of the spectrum.
In both “The Lottery” and “Totem,” the characters are not critical of their history or past, because neither accept change or are open-minded to alternate choices. They are stuck with the mentality that they, and only they are correct. In “The Lottery” the people of the village feel that by maintaining this lottery, they are more civilized than those other villages that have chosen to abolish this practice. This is seen when one of characters from this story, Old Man Warner, says “Pack of crazy fools, listening to young folks, nothing’s good enough for them. Next thing you know, they’ll be wanting to live in caves” (4). Therefore they continue to follow through with their age-old custom. In “Totem,” it is not made blatantly obvious, but since the workers constantly anger the totems by trying to be rid of them, they refuse to consider the totems’ view, which after further investigation can be linked to the Natives’ fight for fairness after the arrival of the first Europeans to Canada. Such an inference can be made when one of the main characters from this story says, “Maybe if we ignore it, it will stop singing. It might even go away or disappear or something” (4). No attempt at accepting the totem and making compromise was made, which implies neither is willing to change or admit they could be wrong in their judgment.
The symbols found in “Totem” and “The Lottery” appear to be very different. However, after further analysis of both stories the universal meaning behind certain symbols is very similar. The story with the more obvious symbol would be “Totem”. As mentioned previously, the totems themselves represent the Native People who once inhabited most of Canada. However, if this story is looked at on a slightly more general perspective, one could say the totems battling the museum by making themselves noticed and attracting attention to themselves represent the fight to keep history alive where it has almost been forgotten. The museum can almost be looked at as a dictator, which one can also interpret the village in “The Lottery” to be as well. Both control their inhabitants, and both leave little room for independent thought. Also, in many ways Tessie of “The Lottery,” and the totems of “Totem,” represent the courageous hero that chooses to stand alone and fight for what they believe is right. In Tessie’s case, this symbolism was only made near the conclusion of the story by her words “’It isn’t fair, it isn’t right” (6). The totems demonstrated their rebellion to the so-called “dictator” throughout the entire course of the story. One can also say the tragic hero in both stories courageously “dies”, but their cause is not lost.
“Totem” and “The Lottery” appear to be completely different stories irrelevant to each other. In Jackson’s “The Lottery,” the characters in the story place great emphasis on the matter of tradition. The plot follows a small village of closely related and well-acquainted people who refuse to let go of past traditions. One such tradition they perform is a ritualistic practice, which they refer to as “the lottery.” This lottery to which they refer, is not the typical kind one would expect. Rather, in this practice tickets are drawn from “the black box” to determine which of the village people was next to be stoned to death. The protagonist of this story, Tessie, ends up being the victim to this lottery, at which point her previously “positive” approach to this ritual changes to a more negative standpoint.
In “Totem,” King takes a slightly different approach on the matter of tradition. This story is centered around a Canadian museum/art gallery, which is dealing with a strange issue where totems keep re-appearing and disrupting the peace. The totems show constant resistance when the museum workers try to be rid of them, hollering and crying louder as though becoming more infuriated with each attempt at removing them. Such an inference can be made when one of the main characters from this story says, “Maybe if we ignore it, it will stop singing. It might even go away or disappear or something” (4). No attempt at accepting the totem and making compromise was made, which implies neither is willing to change or admit they could be wrong in their judgment.

Subtropical Plateau
This geographical region is located in the northeast point of the Argentine Republic, as a wedge between Paraguay and Brasil. The rivers of this region, short and torrential, run parallel to each other and go down in the central region of sierras.

The western limit is also the eastern limit of the Puna, until Cafayate. In the eastern Mountain Range we can distinguish three big morphological units mountains, streams and valleys.

They are located between the eastern mountain range and the chaqueña prairie and composed by short and parallel sierras, directed to the northeast-southeast. The limit is gradual; it is set in the course of the Sal?river, including Medina and del Campo Sierras, in the northeast of Tucumán.
Cuyo
This region lays in the western part of the country, from the meridional border of the Puna to the latitude 7ºS. It is composed by a big orographic mass to the West and the low part of the mountains to the East.
The mountainous area is characterized by its high peaks with eternal snow and high ways most of the time closed by the snow during the Winter. Its highest peak, the Aconcagua, of 6,5 meters (,81 feet), is situated on the Principal Mountain Range. This region, of about 14.000 Km (5,400 sq.miles) is limited by the entrerriana and santafecina-bonaerense cliff, wich are lines of fault that limit a submerged block, occupied by the delta of the Paran?river and the River Plate.
The constant deposit of sediments provided by the Paran?river constitute the origin of the islands, whose shores (ridges of fertile land), slightly high, are sheltered from the normal rising tides. The process of deltification, slow but steady, creates a constant change in the shape and size of the islands.
Subtropical Plateau
This geographical region is located in the northeast point of the Argentine Republic, as a wedge between Paraguay and Brasil.
