King John
King John was the last of the Angevin kings. John was the archetypical Angevin, the autocratic ruler of a vast territory. His story is a story of failure. The purpose of this report is to show how John rose to power, and what he did to lead his subjects to impose the Magna Carta.
John was the fourth son of Henry II. His brothers were, Henry the Younger, Geoffrey, and Richard. John being the youngest of four meant that the expectations from his father were not as clear as was with his three older brothers. John was destined to be married and live off land from his father until the death of his oldest brother Henry the Younger in 118. Then Henry II began to use John in his plans. Henry the Younger’s death threw a problem into King Henry’s plans. Then Henry II began to use John in his plans. So to solve the problem Henry asked his son Richard to turn over his authority in Aquitaine to John. Eventually Henry forgot about his problems with Richard and worried more about his policy in Ireland. He knighted 18 year old John and sent him to Ireland with 00 knights and a treasury to take charge of the situation. The Irish eventually united against John. John ended up isolated and blocked by the locals. He was unable to pay his mercenaries and was forced to leave Ireland.
After Geoffrey died in a tournament and Henry’s relationship with Richard worsened, John became King Henry’s favorite. Henry still though, was keeping Richard the heir to the throne. He did however keep Richard guessing whether or not he would inherit the throne. The paranoia backfired when Richard united with Louis of France and declared war on Henry in 118.
John stabbed his father in the back and joined Richard. Henry died in 118.
Richard was crowned king months after Henry died. He named John the Count of Mortain and granted him lands in England. The new king also had enough respect for Johns trouble making tendencies to ban him from England for three years while he went on crusade. However, against Richards better judgement, his mother Eleanor went behind his back to allow John back into England. It was a huge mistake. John conspired against Richards regent, William Longchamp, and set himself up as King in all but name. A plot to divide up the Angevin empire between himself and the new French King, Philip Augustus, was only just prevented by his mother, when she intercepted him as he was about to take ship from Southampton. When Richard was imprisoned on his return from the crusades, by Duke Leopold of Austria, John again conspired with the French King to seize the kingdom. On Richards release John fled to France, but he was soon forgiven by his brother, who himself returned to France, where he died in 11. On his deathbed Richard named John as his heir, although by the law of primogeniture Arthur, the son of an older brother, Geoffrey, should have succeeded him. Johns coronation took place at Westminster Abbey in 11.
Johns energetic campaigning and diplomatic moves threw his opponents into a corner, and by May 100 he was able to negotiate the Treaty of Le Goulet with Philip of France. Having successfully secured his kingdom, John almost immediately proceeded to throw it away. In 100, he married Isabella of Angoulême, Hugh, the justiciary of Ireland’s 1-year-old fianc�. John was deeply suspicious of the powerful position Hugh le Brun had built up for himself during 11, and the marriage of Isabella was but the first in a series of maneuvers designed to curb that power. John then took Hugh’s position away and gave it to Aymer dAngoulême, taking away all Hugh had worked so hard for. Also, he deprived Hughs brother Ralph of the county of Eu which Richard had given him in Normandy.
The Lusignans appealed to Philip for justice, who summoned John before his court as his vassal to give an account of himself in autumn 101. John refused to attend, on the grounds that the French court had no jurisdiction over the Duke of Normandy, but Philip replied that he was summoned as the Duke of Aquitaine, and in April 10 declared John a rebellious vassal, confiscating all his feoffs. With Philip on their side, the lords of Lusignan went into revolt.
Richard I, through careful diplomacy, had ringed Philip with Angevin allies among the princes and nobles of France, forcing the French king to fight a war on several fronts if he wanted to fight the Angevins. However, by 10, many of these allies had either gone on crusade or been won over to Philips side, leaving John isolated and alone. So John had no international allies but, apart from Poitou and Brittany, his internal territories were secure. As John raised an army in Normandy to fight Philip, Arthur and the Lusignans managed to trap Eleanor in the castle of Mirabeau, from where she sent a message to her son for aid. John sped south to surprise the rebels unprepared outside Mirabeau on 1 July 10. Not a single rebel escaped. John had captured over 00 knights and all the leaders of the rebellion, including Arthur and Hugh le Brun. Yet once again, he threw it all away by taking things too far. He dismissed the pleas of William and Aimeri, and treated his captives most cruelly, making sure that noblemen died of harsh conditions. Worst of all, John was involved in the murder of Arthur of Brittany. A rumor circulated that, drunk and possessed by the devil, John had killed Arthur with his own hands and thrown him into the bottom of a river. Horrified by Johns actions William and Aimeri rebelled. John now saw enemies on all sides.
John is best remembered not for the loss of France, but for signing the Magna Carta. He didn’t sign the Magna Carta as a sign of weak kingship. It was the exact opposite. It was a because of the Angevin collapse in France, it was started by the increasing tax demands imposed by the king in his efforts to finance his French expeditions. Johns thinking was not dominated by England, but by France.

Through this statement Alexie show that even in a person’s own country so many people feel out of place. People are always trying to fit in with what society expects them to be, without making a statement too bold that makes them stand out. Alexie does a wonderful job of saying that people all want a place they recognize and in which they feel at home. “Seems I’d spent my whole life that way, looking for anything I recognize” (15), the protagonist says.
The major cause of people feeling outcast, and separated from society is people’s problems with stereotyping and discrimination. Alexie argues that all people stereotype, all people pass judgements and all people are incredibly distrustful in today’s society. Alexie uses the 7-11, a place where the protagonist formally worked, as the perfect place to demonstrate people’s distrust. Headlines today read of numerous robberies, gas station “shoot ‘em up’s,” and many other crimes. In today’s society people have a million reasons to be distrustful, but Alexie tries to show readers there is a large difference between distrust and discrimination. As the protagonist walked into the 7-11 the clerk watched him carefully, “He looked me over so he could describe me to the police later” (15). The clerk was suspicious of the man because he had dark skin and dark hair. Society judges on looks because they don’t have the time to get to know the person on the inside. The cop confronted the protagonist, “You’re making people nervous. You don’t fit the profile of the neighborhood”(15). The author captures the moral of the story in this one statement. An innocent man, driving around in a neighborhood that he didn’t “fit the profile” should not be grounds for people to call the police.
The final point Alexie focuses on is the problem with Indian-white relations. The protagonist of the story is a reflection of Alexie, a Spokane Indian himself. Alexie is trying to express to readers that the Spokane and all other tribes still hold a grudge against “white men.” Due to the history behind the Indian’s land being taken from them, there is a lot of repressed anger. Alexie tries to express that the Indian people have not accepted the fate that has been given to them. Through the protagonists badgering humor Alexie expresses how he truly feels. Alexie describes the clerk’s reaction as, “He swallowed hard like a white man does in those situations.” This statement shows the resentment and judgmental thoughts that Indians still hold on to. I think that Alexie wants readers to be aware of the existence of Indians. The same kind of quote was used again later in the story, referring to the clerk as white and not by a name. The protagonist looks at the clerk and thinks, “There was something about him I liked, even if it was three in the morning and he was white”(15). These two quotes are totally contradictory to the major theme of the story. The protagonist was defining the clerk by the color of his skin, and that is the very thing that Alexie wanted society to recognize as being wrong. The last sentence of the story has far more significance than perhaps is concived at first glance. This very unique ending plays many roles in the final mood of the story, and resolves the major conflicts very quickly. When analized closely, it is noticable that the ending is ironic, in the story and for the story. This means that in the story, the sentence sums up the ironic fact that Scratchy has been defeated, and not by the sword, persay... but by the woman. The sentence also creates an ironic ending for the story, as it is an abrupt ending, contraditcing the expected outcome of a shootout or fight of sorts. Instead, the hero raises not a hand, and the villan surrenders without putting up a fight. By using the unique, desrciptive ending that Crane does, emphasizing the unexpectedness of the outcome with funnel-shaped tracks (67), it brings out the irony that the excitment and anticipation the story has geared up is then just shot down, with no shots fired at all!
This last sentence, while creating the irony it does, and perhaps putting a sort of downer on the ending, also resolves the story abruptly, yet effectivly. The two main conflicts are that of Jack, worried about the worlds view on his ability to carry out his duties now that he is married, and that of Scratchy, who is out to shoot up the town, and anyone in his path, especially Jack. The last sentence concludes the fact that the conflict between Jack and Scratchy is over, and Scratchy is defeated, and also concludes that Jack is still the boss, which is what he worried about throughout the story.
The role of each character in a story is very important, though each characters idea of their own role may not be the same as other characters. For instance, Jack sees his role as the town sherrif, though the Bride, and now Scratchy, see him as the husband. With more of the story having been written, we probably would have seen that the people of the town shared Jacks view of his role as the sherrif. The Bride sees herself differently that others as well. She, having come from a different setting with a different role before she got married, feels out of place, while Jack has more confidence in her, and sees her simply as his wife, and not the cook. It was quite apparent that she had cooked, and that she expected to cook, dutifully (618).
So the way each character views their own role determines much of the way they carry it out. And the idea that the other characters have of another characters role determines quite a bit of how they interact with them. We see this in the final section of the story, when Scratchys determined idea of Jacks being the sheriff is torn down and replaced with his realization of Jack as a married man. The difference, even if only in his mind, is drastic, and completly changes the way he interacts with Jack, as we see when he stands down and walks away.
In this story, the glittering parlor car symbolizes the change in the Brides life. It contrasts with her plain, underclass countenance (618) and represents her new life as a wife instead of a cook. But it also creates a mood of anxiety or worry. The Bride is not yet comfortable in her new lifestyle and role, and she projects it outside and inside. Inside, she views other people as judging her, making her nervous, and therefore, on the outside, she looks misplaced, as she twisted her head to regaurd her puff sleeves... They embarrassed her (618).
I expected the town of Yellow Sky to be more stereotypical. But as we see with Scratchy, for instance, he is not quite the typical bad guy. This is shown in a comic way when he tried to hit the paper that he knives to the door, and misses, curses, and walks away. Also, Scratchy unexpectedly gives up the fight when he discovers that Jack is married. Cranes characters fit into the town because they fit together with themselves. This very unique ending plays many roles in the final mood of the story, and resolves the major conflicts very quickly. When analized closely, it is noticable that the ending is ironic, in the story and for the story. This means that in the story, the sentence sums up the ironic fact that Scratchy has been defeated, and not by the sword, persay... but by the woman. The sentence also creates an ironic ending for the story, as it is an abrupt ending, contraditcing the expected outcome of a shootout or fight of sorts. Instead, the hero raises not a hand, and the villan surrenders without putting up a fight. By using the unique, desrciptive ending that Crane does, emphasizing the unexpectedness of the outcome with funnel-shaped tracks (67), it brings out the irony that the excitment and anticipation the story has geared up is then just shot down, with no shots fired at all!
This last sentence, while creating the irony it does, and perhaps putting a sort of downer on the ending, also resolves the story abruptly, yet effectivly. The two main conflicts are that of Jack, worried about the worlds view on his ability to carry out his duties now that he is married, and that of Scratchy, who is out to shoot up the town, and anyone in his path, especially Jack. The last sentence concludes the fact that the conflict between Jack and Scratchy is over, and Scratchy is defeated, and also concludes that Jack is still the boss, which is what he worried about throughout the story.
The role of each character in a story is very important, though each characters idea of their own role may not be the same as other characters. For instance, Jack sees his role as the town sherrif, though the Bride, and now Scratchy, see him as the husband. With more of the story having been written, we probably would have seen that the people of the town shared Jacks view of his role as the sherrif. The Bride sees herself differently that others as well. She, having come from a different setting with a different role before she got married, feels out of place, while Jack has more confidence in her, and sees her simply as his wife, and not the cook. It was quite apparent that she had cooked, and that she expected to cook, dutifully (618).
So the way each character views their own role determines much of the way they carry it out. And the idea that the other characters have of another characters role determines quite a bit of how they interact with them. We see this in the final section of the story, when Scratchys determined idea of Jacks being the sheriff is torn down and replaced with his realization of Jack as a married man. The difference, even if only in his mind, is drastic, and completly changes the way he interacts with Jack, as we see when he stands down and walks away.
In this story, the glittering parlor car symbolizes the change in the Brides life. It contrasts with her plain, underclass countenance (618) and represents her new life as a wife instead of a cook. But it also creates a mood of anxiety or worry. The Bride is not yet comfortable in her new lifestyle and role, and she projects it outside and inside. Inside, she views other people as judging her, making her nervous, and therefore, on the outside, she looks misplaced, as she twisted her head to regaurd her puff sleeves... They embarrassed her (618).
I expected the town of Yellow Sky to be more stereotypical. But as we see with Scratchy, for instance, he is not quite the typical bad guy. This is shown in a comic way when he tried to hit the paper that he knives to the door, and misses, curses, and walks away. The opening of this film shows Henry (John Nance) in a mid-shot, horizontal across the screen; first at the bottom, with half of his face concealed. Centre screen is an asteroid, over which Henry’s head will float in subsequent scenes, with both being visible at once. The decision to show such surreal scenes from the outset only serves as a catalyst for audience curiosity, and indeed, the film in its entirety is a cohesive blend of disturbing imagery, challenging metaphors and conceptual surrealism. After the introduction previously mentioned, the viewer is invited to roam across the surface of this asteroid; it is almost as if we are in a sort of craft, travelling in a straight line, looking downwards at its undulating, inhospitable, rocky terrain, before the dark, trench- like aperture that has occupied the central portion on the screen widens, and the shot goes into darkness. Lynch transports the viewer through a piece of sheet metal, into which a hole has been cut; it is as if we are falling in slow motion, being forced to enter the unknown, and subsequently we are shown a man on whose face there seems to be blemishes and imperfections. He is shown comparatively small, occupying only a relatively small portion on the screen; the light shining on his face reveals his gaze, and the strange marks, previously mentioned. His position in relation to the camera means that the audience sees nothing more than his left cheek; maybe he is an important figure in relation to the film as a whole, perhaps God-like, as his gaze seems purposeful, and he appears to be looking downwards slightly, as if carefully watching something; or perhaps he is just simply a further glimpse into this strange world we are exploring at the beginning. Likewise with the worm that escapes Henry’s mouth; this is maybe just a potentially repulsive image, or it is symbolic of an inner corruption or other negative thought escaping, or both, depending on the viewer’s perception. The seated figure then turns more towards the camera, and we are given a greater insight into his facial characteristics.
When we meet Henry for the first time, it is implied that he has been watching all of this introduction, because his gaze travels above and past the camera in a way that would suggest he has just viewed something surreal; his gaze is one of mystification, and he rushes off quickly, the camera static. With Henry walking away from the camera, the viewer is able to look at the surroundings, and at Henry within these, thus contextualising his presence. The flat surroundings presented to the viewer are slightly unexciting at this early stage after the introduction, but the opening of the tunnel that occupies the centre of the shot and the dark, diagonal shadow, maintains the visual presence of the film.
We subsequently see Henry walking home through a variety of angles; tracking shots, point-of-view shots, long shots, which serve as an indication of the world to which he seems to be accustomed. The long shots in particular are used when he walks through more unwelcoming and gloomy parts, in order to emphasise these parts more than others. For this film, mise-en-scène is of great importance; when Henry enters his apartment, the atmosphere is dark and dismal, and once again the camera is stationary; the viewer gets to see the lobby of the apartment for a long enough period of time, before Henry enters, to acquire the feelings of unease about the place that Lynch desires; then, we enter Henry’s room.
Almost immediately after him entering his room, we get a clear picture of what sort of person Henry is; he stares at the radiator, the point-of-view shot used moves in a slow circular motion; his gaze, and therefore ours, is long and contemplative, as if perhaps he is looking at it whilst thinking of something else; the length of this shot also gives the viewer time to acquire a slight feeling of irritation at the radiator’s persistent whistle. The point-of-view shot continues across the floor, on which there seems to be straw, or something similar, before we are shown a close-up of Henry’s seemingly troubled, unhappy face. The next shot seen through his eyes is of the window, bricked up, further emphasising his isolation, which must be the cause of his despondency. It is with deliberate ambiguity also that he stares at the picture of the girl in the way he does; it is as if he likes looking at the picture, as he does so for some time, though he doesn’t smile whilst doing this; Lynch keeps the camera in the same position, focused on his face, enabling us to scrutinize any reactions to this picture. The interloping close up shot of the picture maybe gives us a chance to see what sort of girl Henry would want to keep a photograph of, and enable us to create first impressions of her, perhaps. It is interesting also that, firstly, the photograph is in two halves, with both the halves being in entirely different parts of the drawer, and secondly, Henry throws a coin into the bowl of water in his drawer; a superstitious act that encourages wishes to come true notice how many coins are in the bowl already. Like previously with the seated figure at the window, we see only the side of Henry’s face, though enough to notice any facial expressions he may show. The angle also enables us to see into his drawer, and gives the viewer a voyeuristic quality, as though we are intruding on him looking at his personal belongings.
In most of this film, the lighting pays homage to the style of chiaroscuro. This is shown to excellent effect when Henry visits his girlfriend Mary’s house, but the use of the camera is equally interesting. The first shot of Mrs. X gives a very ominous feel; she sits with a steely glare fixed on Henry, the lighting is greatly contrasted, embodying the rules of chiaroscuro. There is a certain unity and balance to the shots in Mr. And Mrs. X’s house, as if everything has been perfectly arranged to somehow look ‘normal’, that is difficult to find in most shots in Henry’s room. The house has been shown to be slightly contradictory in the sense that the untidiness of the kitchen, with the presence of the immobile old woman, can be contrasted to the atypical verisimilitude of the lounge and dining area which seem quite customary; if these were captured in a single frame, one could be forgiven for being ignorant to the family’s curious strangeness.
The use of the deep focus shot when Mr. X is handing Henry the piece of chicken and the carving knife, shows Lynch’s attention to shot construction; the dish of chicken in the foreground is important because it is their imminent meal, (we are not aware it will not get eaten), and by Mr. X reaching into it to hand a piece to Henry, the viewer’s gaze is directed towards it. Mr. X and Henry are important because the audience will look at each of them as they speak, and observe their actions, and the small shelf unit in the background, occupying the middle of the screen, gives depth to the shot; the scene would not have the same visual presence if the corner was bare. Likewise when Mary emerges from round the door frame crying, we see both her and her father, both in focus at once; Mary reveals to us, through her crying and apparent uneasiness, the implications of the conversation Mrs. X wants with Henry, and Mr. X displays an almost imbecilic quality with his frivolous grin. Even though the set-up of the shot is simple, there is still an element of visual presence too that maintains the interest of the viewer. The chiaroscuro-esque contrasts are used to good effect when Mrs. X has this conversation with Henry; by pushing them both up into the dark corner, toward which our gaze will be directed, it gives the sequence a heavier feel of bewilderment.
When the ‘baby’ finally arrives into the film, it is handled in a way that arouses curiosity for the viewer. Mary is shown feeding this creature from such a distance from the camera that we cannot properly see what it looks like, and it is interesting to ask oneself what initial feeling we are supposed to have towards it; the set-up of the frame means that we see the bricked up window in shot also; a reminder of the lonely world this creature has been brought into therefore, should we have sympathy for it, or be disdainful of its inhumanity? Lynch offers us quite a repulsive close-up of the creature after its initial scene in the film, and it is noticeable the way Lynch treats it from then on; either allowing the shot of it to linger, so the viewer watches in preparation for the cut to the next scene, or offers a close-up, or extreme close-up to present it to us explicitly.
The conclusion of this film, at first, offers little sense of closure. However, when we consider the final scene that Lynch gives us, of Henry embracing the peculiar chipmunk lady, the ‘Lady In The Radiator’, the meaning of the numerous point-of-view shots of the radiator throughout become clear. The closing scene has a certain heavenly, ethereal quality, which would suggest that Henry is dead perhaps, therefore the strange woman would symbolize death. When we watch the film a second or third time thereafter, the shots of the radiator have the larger implication of Henry contemplating death, even suicide. The latter would mean that when the shots of the radiator are viewed again, they communicate a stronger sense of loneliness than when first seen; we are also able to read more into, and indeed want to scrutinize more closely, all facial expressions Lynch directs the viewer to through the use of close-ups, and those we seek to notice ourselves, where Henry’s face is not fully shown, (when we watch him from the high angle looking through his drawer, for example).
The dream that Henry has could also be seen as, effectively, the final realisation of his loneliness, and Lynch handles it in an interesting way; the girl from next door with whom Henry gets intimate, is shown in nothing less than a mid-shot; the addition of the close-ups serve as a chance to examine the girl, the similar shots of Henry reveal his unease to the viewer and the audience is strangely drawn into this scene, invited to become part of the intimacy. The subsequent scenes of further contemplation of death (meeting with the chipmunk lady), the beheading of Henry, and the retrieval of his head by a small boy to be made into pencil erasers are all worthy of note because everything is emphasised, and placed in the scene in a way that generates the right level of initial confusion for the viewer.
Lynch is quoted as saying this film is a “dream of dark and troubling things”¹; Henry is a dark and troubled character, who we have the chance to investigate closely, and who, like the film may lack initial perspicuity. Mr. X and Henry are important because the audience will look at each of them as they speak, and observe their actions, and the small shelf unit in the background, occupying the middle of the screen, gives depth to the shot; the scene would not have the same visual presence if the corner was bare. Likewise when Mary emerges from round the door frame crying, we see both her and her father, both in focus at once; Mary reveals to us, through her crying and apparent uneasiness, the implications of the conversation Mrs. X wants with Henry, and Mr. X displays an almost imbecilic quality with his frivolous grin. Even though the set-up of the shot is simple, there is still an element of visual presence too that maintains the interest of the viewer. The chiaroscuro-esque contrasts are used to good effect when Mrs. X has this conversation with Henry; by pushing them both up into the dark corner, toward which our gaze will be directed, it gives the sequence a heavier feel of bewilderment.
When the ‘baby’ finally arrives into the film, it is handled in a way that arouses curiosity for the viewer. Mary is shown feeding this creature from such a distance from the camera that we cannot properly see what it looks like, and it is interesting to ask oneself what initial feeling we are supposed to have towards it; the set-up of the frame means that we see the bricked up window in shot also; a reminder of the lonely world this creature has been brought into therefore, should we have sympathy for it, or be disdainful of its inhumanity? Lynch offers us quite a repulsive close-up of the creature after its initial scene in the film, and it is noticeable the way Lynch treats it from then on; either allowing the shot of it to linger, so the viewer watches in preparation for the cut to the next scene, or offers a close-up, or extreme close-up to present it to us explicitly.
The conclusion of this film, at first, offers little sense of closure. However, when we consider the final scene that Lynch gives us, of Henry embracing the peculiar chipmunk lady, the ‘Lady In The Radiator’, the meaning of the numerous point-of-view shots of the radiator throughout become clear. The closing scene has a certain heavenly, ethereal quality, which would suggest that Henry is dead perhaps, therefore the strange woman would symbolize death. When we watch the film a second or third time thereafter, the shots of the radiator have the larger implication of Henry contemplating death, even suicide. The latter would mean that when the shots of the radiator are viewed again, they communicate a stronger sense of loneliness than when first seen; we are also able to read more into, and indeed want to scrutinize more closely, all facial expressions Lynch directs the viewer to through the use of close-ups, and those we seek to notice ourselves, where Henry’s face is not fully shown, (when we watch him from the high angle looking through his drawer, for example).
The dream that Henry has could also be seen as, effectively, the final realisation of his loneliness, and Lynch handles it in an interesting way; the girl from next door with whom Henry gets intimate, is shown in nothing less than a mid-shot; the addition of the close-ups serve as a chance to examine the girl, the similar shots of Henry reveal his unease to the viewer and the audience is strangely drawn into this scene, invited to become part of the intimacy. The subsequent scenes of further contemplation of death (meeting with the chipmunk lady), the beheading of Henry, and the retrieval of his head by a small boy to be made into pencil erasers are all worthy of note because everything is emphasised, and placed in the scene in a way that generates the right level of initial confusion for the viewer.
Lynch is quoted as saying this film is a “dream of dark and troubling things”¹; Henry is a dark and troubled character, who we have the chance to investigate closely, and who, like the film may lack initial perspicuity. Though “The Lost Weekend” is considered to be film noir, there are major differences between it and other classic film noir movies. What makes The Lost Weekend a film noir movie? As we have seen The Lost Weekend has no femme fatale, no mystery, murder, private eye, and none of the leading ladies is particularly sultry or sensual. However as I analyzed the film there are many key areas in which The Lost Weekend is similar to other film noir movies. As I took a closer look I found some interesting parallels between alcohol and the classic femme fatale. The use of lighting in The Lost Weekend is also extremely important to show the despair and demise of Don Birnam and is a trademark of film noir. I will also show how the internal struggle that Don is dealing with parallels other classic film noir movies. Finally I will prove that the ending in The Lost Weekend is a prime example of a film noir and that this movie is indeed film noir.
First, I believe that there is a femme fatale in this movie. Although we do not see a sensual woman who is manipulating men and using her sexuality as a tool to conquer men; we do have something in this movie that takes the place of the femme fatale. This substitute or alternate femme fatale has many of the qualities that a femme fatale posses. It is alluring, mysterious, controlling, manipulative, it makes men think irrationally, and it can also be deadly. What I am describing is the classic femme fatale character and in The Lost Weekend I believe that alcohol plays this role perfectly. Alcohol has become the alluring and sensual pleasure in Don Birnams life. Alcohol has such a controlling grasp on his life he can’t live without it. Don’s lust for alcohol and desire to posses it is in many ways similar to both Walter Neff’s desire for Phyllis in Double Indemnity as well as Michael O’Hara’s desire for Elsa Bannister in The Lady From Shanghai. Don’s lust for alcohol drives him to do irrational acts of desperation. For example he searches all day to find a pawn shop that is open so he can sell his typewriter in exchange for booze. Walter Neff’s desire for Phyllis drives him to ultimately murder her husband, and Michael O’Hara decides to kill Grisby in exchange for money and a chance at starting a new life with Elsa. There is light shining through the double door entrance to the ward and the window is crisscrossed with metal that creates diamond shapes. The light passing through the window creates a shadow on Don much as it did in Double Indemnity. The use of the lighting gives you the impression of prison bars in both instances. This use of lighting helps the viewer in that it builds upon the mood and gives a creepy feeling that something is just not quite right in the scene.
In many film noir movies there is also this internal conflict between good and evil. In The Lady From Shanghai Michael O’Hara is battling the desire and lust for Elsa and his need to escape her. Walter Neff is also battling his lust for Phyllis and his own morality. In The Lost Weekend Don’s internal battle is against his desire for alcohol and his desire to be a successful writer. Though the internal struggles for both Michael and Walter are against acts to commit murder or in Michaels case to confess to murder. Don’s struggle is not for someone else’s life but it is a battle for his own life. He is constantly struggling and losing to the desire to kill himself by use of alcohol. This desire ultimately causes him to purchase a gun to end his own life. All of these men are in a battle for their souls, each is lured into this struggle by the femme fatale which in Don’s case is the alcohol. At the end of Double Indemnity and The Lady from Shanghai both Water and Michael have lost the battle, neither of the men gets the girl or the money and both are worse off than they were before. This is not the case with Don however. At the end of The Lost Weekend we are left with a sense of hope that Don will conquer his battle against alcohol and become the great writer he wants to be.
This ending is not a typical ending for a film noir and is cause for debate that The Lost Weekend is not in fact film noir. At the end of the movie Don gets the girl, appears to win the struggle against his evil desires, and is headed toward a successful career as a writer. However in the movie there is a reoccurring theme. This theme or thematic element is the idea of the circle. A circle has no beginning and no end. The idea of a circle gives us the feeling that Don’s struggle is not over at the end of the movie, he is just back at the place where we saw him at the beginning of the movie. The most vivid example of this circle that Don can’t escape is when he is back at his brother’s apartment and he sees the mouse chewing through the wall. A bat then appears at the window and flies inside the room. The bat begins flying circles around Don’s head and it then sees the mouse trying to escape from the wall and pounces on the mouse killing it in bloody fashion. This vivid and disturbing scene gives us a visual picture of the internal battle that Don is going through. Don is represented by the mouse trying to chew it way out of the wall. This symbol of the mouse is portraying Don as he is struggling to free himself from the addiction of alcoholism. The bat is the vicious cycle of alcoholism and the hopelessness of Don’s plight. However you view the ending this movie it is a wonderful example of film noir. This ending may not be as dark as other film noir movies, however the thematic material certainly paints a darker picture of Don’s future than do other film noir movies.

There is nothing wrong, nor unlawful in transfer pricing in trade between individual entities in multi-entity corporations or trans-national companies (TNCs) as long as the transaction is conducted at an arms-length basis.
In fact, according to a study by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, around one third of world exports were intra-firm trade or internal transactions between affiliate firms of TNCs.
This is the natural consequence of economic globalization. TNCs have steadily expanded their international production networks by choosing locations with appropriate combinations of high labor productivity, low wages, low cost infrastructure and, sometimes, including large domestic markets.
Transfer pricing refers to the practice of related entities that do business across international boundaries and seek to maximize their profit in low tax areas and minimize their profit in high tax areas.
For example a company in Hong Kong, a low tax area, which has an affiliate entity in Indonesia, a high tax area, might try to maximize profit in Hong Kong and minimize profit in Indonesia.
The transfer pricing policy that is adopted by TNCs usually has a significant effect on the amount of profit or loss in each of the countries in which they do business. For this reason, the issue of transfer pricing is important not only for the multinational groups but also for tax authorities around the world.
No wonder, the large international accounting firms usually offer advice on transfer pricing and the tax liabilities.
The opportunities for transfer pricing occur in the provision of goods and services and in borrowing and lending. If a company has an affiliate entity in a high tax area it would be advantageous for the group if the goods and services supplied by the head office to the affiliate entity are priced high and if loans are made expensive so that the taxable income of the affiliate entity is minimized.
For these reasons the tax authorities in most industrialized countries require that cross border trading and financial transactions between affiliated entities should be conducted according to the arms- length standard.
This means that when the head office or a branch supplies goods or lends money to another branch or an affiliated entity then the terms of sale and the terms of lending and borrowing should be the same as if the transactions had been between completely independent parties.
The arms-length standard is internationally recognized and used by taxation authorities around the world. It is a standard that is promoted and developed in particular by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
It might simply be a coincidence that the transfer pricing issue arose at the same time Minister of Trade and Industry Rini Soewandi disclosed last Wednesday that she had recommended to President Megawati Soekarnoputri to reintroduce a system of pre-shipment inspection of imports (PSI).
The recommendation was prompted by manufacturers complaints of unfair import competition caused by foreign goods entering the country either through physical smuggling but mainly through under-invoicing of import prices to minimize duty and tax payments.
But the PSI system can also be an effective way of preventing unlawful transfer pricing by companies that use imported inputs, parts or components from their affiliates overseas.
Between 185 and 15, when Indonesia used PSI that was conducted by an independent surveyor company, the possibilities for transfer pricing on goods supplied from a foreign entity to an affiliate entity in Indonesia were minimized.
Because, in addition to verifying the declared customs value, the surveyor also compared the prices charged for the goods with the normal export market prices in the country of export.
The normal export market price is a similar concept to the arms length standard.
However, if transfer pricing is to be properly addressed by PSI, then the PSI should also apply to goods exported from Indonesia to ensure that goods exported from the country be fairly priced in accordance with the arms length standard and not undervalued so as to minimize the profit of the Indonesian entity.
It is primarily the responsibility of the tax office to ensure that individual and corporate taxpayers properly pay all legal taxes due, and transfer prices that are not charged at arms length are one of the items that should be examined in tax audits.
The recent establishment of the Large Taxpayers Office in Jakarta which is staffed by officials with salaries competitive to private-sector auditors is designed to handle big companies, including foreign firms, with complex transactions.
But examining transfer prices in intra-company trade requires special expertise to compare market prices formed in complex transactions around the world. This is still lacking among tax officials. The task also needs networking with many institutions overseas for data cross-checking.
Hence, the PSI system proposed by Minister Rini could simultaneously achieve many objectives Preventing unfair import competition and unlawful transfer pricing, safeguarding state revenues from import duty and tax payment and verifying the rules of origin of imports within the ASEAN Free Trade Area beginning in January.
Under AFTA, where import tariffs for most goods with a minimum ASEAN content of 40 percent will be very low, ranging from zero to 5 percent, Indonesia may find itself inundated by imports from other ASEAN countries.
Customs officials, who are notorious among most businesspeople for their incompetence or high venality, will simply not be capable of verifying such a complex matter as rules of origin for input contents of industrial products.
An independent surveyor company with international networks that are adequately supported with laboratory testing equipment and staffed by specially-trained commodity surveyors should do their job until the customs and tax services acquire enough competence and have the adequate resources to take over.
