I wish to begin by saying that this is not an easy letter for me to write, and, if given the

opportunity, I would rather not; however I feel compelled by God’s Holy Scripture and

the Holy Spirit to make know my concerns so that the light of the scriptures may reveal

all.

I have been attending Houghton for 17 years. Through this time, I have seen God

move in my life, in others’ lives, and in the life of the church body. I have been actively

involved in teaching, committee work, and have been on the administrative board;

currently I have no positions of responsibility other than that which God has called me to.

I am deeply troubled about how situations have been dealt with this past while. I

am disturbed that we have come dangerously close to “playing church” and, through

manipulation, have passed things on that are true but not the truth. The fact that God’s

house and alter have been used as a platform to say things that are not true, much less the

truth, should be of great concern. I have heard political commentary, words of anger, and

deceptive practices from behind the alter. Of late, these things have been happening much

too frequently. I have heard an invitation from behind the alter for people to leave the

church. The office of the pastor is one of the shepherd, and he has scattered his flock. In

all sincerity, I question how and why we have gotten to this state. Have we forgotten the

reverence with which we are to enter the sanctuary? Have we forgotten the holiness of

the alter? These have been consecrated as places for adoration and worship of the King

and to treat them with less than all holy reverence is wrong.

Throughout the scriptures, Christ and his apostles warn against these types of

things. These practices are wholly unscriptural with the short term effect of swaying

people, but the long term effect of damaging souls. We have come into the habit of

disguising the truth for the sake of people’s feelings, and while it is important to love one

another in Christ, it is paramount that deviation from scripture is not our practice. Christ

did not suffer on the cross and establish his church so that it should be degraded to human

practices under the guise of spirituality.

The decisions that have been made lately have cleaved the congregation and

scattered the flock, these are not the fruits of a spirit filled, spirit guided church. We have

been too willing to compromise truth to ensure preferential treatment upon individuals.

Christ himself, whom we should model ourselves after, suffered greatly, and to think that

people “deserve” to be treated better is an insult to Christ’s suffering. It is a further insult

to the people of the congregation to manipulate words and pass things off as God’s

moving in our church when the whole while it is individuals creating their own sense of

what is right and wrong, of what truth is and of making decisions as to what the people

should and should not know.

When Pastor Dale tendered his resignation, it was made effective Nov. 0th, 00.

In my mind, this is far too long. After having heard the things that have been said and the

circumstances that have brought us to this point, the ministry of the senior pastor has been

greatly jeopardized, and to allow this to go on to Nov. 0th puts the current congregation

at risk of further division, more families leaving and damaging souls. Over the past

number of years we have lost a lot of families to conflict with the church leadership. I

have found myself being an apologist for the actions and inactions of our senior pastor and

I know many of the reasons that some of the community members have for not attending

Houghton B.I.C. This is disturbing enough. The veils of secrecy that have been used to

disguise truth, have also doubled as barriers to the community, and instruments of division

within the church.

While the protection of Dale is important, it is just as important that the types of

practices that have led to the current situation be examined critically and be

acknowledged to the point where ownership and responsibility be accepted and applied

where they belong. Then we will see clear how were can transform from a church that

merely survives to a church that thrives.

The Board meeting in July was held in the sanctuary. Why did it happen here and

not in the Board Room? Was there an attempt to set the stage, to play on people’s

emotion to suggest that responsibility for the things that have happened lately and how

they have been dealt with are the responsibility of deacons, the Board and the others

involved in varying types of conflict with Dale? If any of these are true, then God forgive

us.

Although the issues of which I speak may appear to have been addressed, they

have not. Decisions made by the leadership in the church should be done according to

scripture, according to B.I.C. doctrines, not according to emotion. For too long, issues

have been swept under the rug, excused, or entirely dismissed for the sake of protecting

people. This must stop if it contradicts scripture. We have become too comfortable

making sure that certain people be comfortable when Christ continually calls us out of

comfort.

If these issues are not dealt with swiftly, and thoroughly then it will only make it

seem as acceptable practice. A search in scripture for direction, wisdom and discernment

reveals that this is not an acceptable practice, neither from the positions of deacons,

administrative board or the pastor. The way that conflict has been handled only

jeopardizes the truth and calls into question the direction of Houghton, and any future

ministries of the pastor. It pains me to think that so much of Dale’s times has to be spent

resolving conflict between Dale and others, when clearly there are so many areas in the

church which are hurting and need the support of a stable, sincere and genuinely

concerned shepherd.

I would ask the Bishop, and the Board to take a close look at what has happened

at Houghton and how through application of scripture resolutions may be made so that we

may truly and truthfully experience the fullness of God’s blessings.

Sincerely, your brother in Christ,
