The innocence of children represents the main theme in Alice Walker’s short story. Alice Walker’s short story, “The Flowers,” relates the innocence of a young girl. This young girl, Myop, encounters a personal change within herself while picking flowers in the woods. Alice Walker uses the flowers to symbolize the innocence that Myop will eventually lose.

As Myop begins her adventure, she happily makes her “own path” (7). This path leads her to new flowers that she has not seen before. Walker describes the flowers as “an armful of strange blue flowers with velvety ridges and sweet-suds bush full of the brown fragrant buds” (7). The new flowers symbolize that things are good without any troubles. Walker uses this symbolization to inform readers that Myop’s innocence is still present and this is a happy time for Myop.

The new path that Myop has taken leads her not only to new flowers, but also a strange unfamiliar place. “She had often been as far before, but the strangeness of the land made it not as pleasant as her usual haunts” (7). Although this place is unfamiliar, Myop continues her new path to pick flowers. As she begins to “circle back to the house,” she stumbles upon a body (7). She is not frightened by this encounter, but curious and intrigued. She gazes around the spot until she notices as wild pink rose. She picks the wild pink rose and notices “the rotted remains of a noose” (74). Walker uses the pink rose to symbolize Myop’s understanding of the situation.

This new path of picking new flowers leads to the realization that the skeleton was beaten and hung. It is obvious by the description Walker uses that this skeleton was once of an African American. It is at this point that Myop’s happy time of picking flowers has been lost. Picking only one flower lost the innocence that Myop once possessed. The symbolization of this flower informs readers that Myop realizes what occurs in her own African American environment.

The flowers symbolize Myop’s innocence as a child. One of the last lines of the story says, “Myop laid down her flowers” (74). The flowers represent the loss of Myop’s innocence, but she lays down the flowers as a sign of respect also. This sign of respect symbolizes the personal change of maturing. Walker uses this symbolism to inform readers that Myop has loss her innocence because of the realization of what occurs in her own African American environment.

Fistfighting Against Discrimination

Fistfighting Against Discrimination

“There was another civil war, another terrorist bomb exploded, and one more plane crashes and all aboard were presumed dead. The crime rate is rising in every city with populations larger then 10,000, and a farmer shot his banker after foreclosure on his 1,000 acres” (17). In the short story “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfighting in Heaven,” Sherman Alexie focuses on the need to fit in, stereotypes, and Indian-white relations. I believe that Alexie is trying to illustrate to readers that the country has major issues that need to be addressed.

Alexie focuses primarily on people’s great need to fit into society. Through the development of the protagonist in the story, Alexie shows how out of place people feel when they do not fit society’s “norm.” The protagonist, for example, tells an officer who has just profiled him, “I wanted to tell him that I didn’t fit the profile of the country but I knew it would just get me into trouble” (15). Through this statement Alexie show that even in a person’s own country so many people feel out of place. People are always trying to fit in with what society expects them to be, without making a statement too bold that makes them stand out. Alexie does a wonderful job of saying that people all want a place they recognize and in which they feel at home. “Seems I’d spent my whole life that way, looking for anything I recognize” (15), the protagonist says.

The major cause of people feeling outcast, and separated from society is people’s problems with stereotyping and discrimination. Alexie argues that all people stereotype, all people pass judgements and all people are incredibly distrustful in today’s society. Alexie uses the 7-11, a place where the protagonist formally worked, as the perfect place to demonstrate people’s distrust. Headlines today read of numerous robberies, gas station “shoot ‘em up’s,” and many other crimes. In today’s society people have a million reasons to be distrustful, but Alexie tries to show readers there is a large difference between distrust and discrimination. As the protagonist walked into the 7-11 the clerk watched him carefully, “He looked me over so he could describe me to the police later” (15). The clerk was suspicious of the man because he had dark skin and dark hair. Society judges on looks because they don’t have the time to get to know the person on the inside. The cop confronted the protagonist, “You’re making people nervous. You don’t fit the profile of the neighborhood”(15). The author captures the moral of the story in this one statement. An innocent man, driving around in a neighborhood that he didn’t “fit the profile” should not be grounds for people to call the police.

The final point Alexie focuses on is the problem with Indian-white relations. The protagonist of the story is a reflection of Alexie, a Spokane Indian himself. Alexie is trying to express to readers that the Spokane and all other tribes still hold a grudge against “white men.” Due to the history behind the Indian’s land being taken from them, there is a lot of repressed anger. Alexie tries to express that the Indian people have not accepted the fate that has been given to them. Through the protagonists badgering humor Alexie expresses how he truly feels. Alexie describes the clerk’s reaction as, “He swallowed hard like a white man does in those situations.” This statement shows the resentment and judgmental thoughts that Indians still hold on to. I think that Alexie wants readers to be aware of the existence of Indians. The same kind of quote was used again later in the story, referring to the clerk as white and not by a name. The protagonist looks at the clerk and thinks, “There was something about him I liked, even if it was three in the morning and he was white”(15). These two quotes are totally contradictory to the major theme of the story. The protagonist was defining the clerk by the color of his skin, and that is the very thing that Alexie wanted society to recognize as being wrong. Whether we choose to agree with what Alexie is saying or not, society must recognize that Indians are part of our society today.

In all, the story brought to reader’s attention crucial problems in today’s society. Although the tone of the story was one of mean humor and a great need for change at the end, Alexie makes a point for hope in society. While the protagonist was speaking to his former girlfriend he says, “ ‘What’s going to happen to us?’ I asked her and wished I had the answers for my self’ ” (1). She responded “ ‘I don’t know,’ she said. ‘I want to change the world’”(1). Even if all relationship do not end perfectly there is still hope for a friendship, or in society’s case, for a mutual understanding.

Anyone who loves comedies as much as I do will notice that in many comedies overweight people are used as a tool of humor. Now I’ll be honest I laugh along with everyone else at these movies but sometimes it’s not really funny. Gwenth Paltrow acted out the role of an overweight woman in Shallow Hal. Mike Myers played Fat Bastard in the Austin Power movies. Chris Farley played Tommy in Tommy Boy as an overweight jokester. Jack Black also acted as an overweight jokester in Orange County. Eddie Murphy played a whole family of overweight people in the Nutty Professor movies. Overweight people are misrepresented in comedies that deal with overweight people.

Jack Black starred as Hal who was a very shallow guy when it came to ladies. After hypnosis Black can only see what people are like on the inside not the outside. Gwenth Paltrow is very overweight in real life but to Jack she is perfect because on the inside she is very caring and loving. We have to remember that only Jack can see this inner beauty so his friends think he is just being nice to her. Since Gwenth is overweight she is used as a tool of humor. On their first date she orders tons of food and Jack wonders how she stays so “skinny”. When Jack takes her out to dinner she sits in a booth and the entire booth shatters into pieces and she falls on the floor. In his mind Jack is furious because he sees her as being skinny and yells at the hostess of the restaurant because he thinks the booths are unsafe. After this date they go back to her place and there is a sex scene, when she throws her underwear’s at Jack they are huge and get wrapped around his neck. One day they go on a date and they decide to go canoeing in the lake and since she is so overweight the canoe is tipped down and Jack Black is all the way up in the air. These examples show that throughout this movie overweight people are misrepresented. Just think how it must feel being overweight and watching this movie. I know I would be upset. This movie also brings up the point that many people judge based on what a person looks like not who they really are as a person.

Mike Myers had multiple roles in the Austin Power movies. The main plot of all the Austin Power movies is the battle between Austin Powers and Dr. Evil. One of Mike Myers funniest roles was the part of Fat Bastard. Fat Bastard is used as a tool of humor since he is overweight. In Austin Powers he is sumo wrestling with huge sumo wrestlers from China and beats them all. After the sumo wrestling he is in the locker room and he is shown as very sweaty and smelly. This is mocking overweight people because it might make the audience think that all overweight people are like this. In the first Austin Powers, Austin’s wife goes undercover and when she is in bed with Fat Bastard there are piles and piles of food all over the bedroom. When Fat Bastard first sees Mini-Me, Dr. Evil’s clone, all Fat Bastard can think about is a little chicken running around and he wants Mini-Me to get in his stomach. These scenes are making the generalization that overweight people only think about food and that they can’t even sleep without food around them. The Austin Power movies wouldn’t be as funny without Fat Bastard. The fact that this is true shows that people have a misconception of overweight people.

Chris Farley stared in Tommy Boy as an overweight jokester who after his father death must try to save the family business by traveling around the country trying to sell brake pads. In this movie Farley is overweight and very stupid, but extremely funny. In the beginning he tries to go cow tipping and as he is trying he slips and falls in mud and gets covered in it. At the nearby gas station his friend is hosing him off with gasoline while Farley dances around singing. These two scenes mock overweight people by showing that all they do is joke around and are stupid. Who would really dance around in gasoline singing? In a buyers office Farley loses his mind as he is demonstrating why his brake pads are better than the competitors and almost sets the office on fire when he makes an accident with some toy cars. This scene tries to show that overweight people can’t do anything right and in fact puts them down. His friend Richard and he are in a hotel together and Richard is much smaller than Farley so Farley gets into his suit jacket and starts singing “fat guy in a little coat” and then rips the coat by accident. Chris Farley is known for his comedies and the fact that he is overweight adds to the humor of his movies. Chris Farley died overweight and maybe he wasn’t as happy as he looked in his movies.

Jack Black stars in Orange County as an overweight jokester who still lives at home and decides to try to help his brother get into Yale. After his brother gets rejected from Yale, his girlfriend’s grandparents come over because they are on the board and can get him in. Instead of staying out of sight, Jack walks out in just his underwear’s and gets something to eat. Again this type of scene shows overweight people as only caring about food. Jack comes up with the idea that they should drive to Yale and try to get his name on the list of freshman. After Jack breaks into the building he accidentally sets the whole office on fire. Again this type of scene shows overweight people as always messing things up and can never do anything right.

Eddie Murphy stared as most of the family in the Nutty Professor movies. He also stared as Sherman, who was a scientist that develops a formula to make you lose weight instantly. This scene suggests that overweight people can’t loose weight on their own but need other methods of help. The whole family was very overweight and they were constantly made fun of throughout the movie. When Eddie takes his skinny friend from work home for dinner, they go to his parent’s house. At the dinner table there are so many plates of food that it looked like a mountain range was sitting on the table. This again portrays overweight people as only caring about eating lots of food. Sherman’s brother keeps hitting on the girl that Sherman brought home. Another very “funny” part is Sherman takes the formula that makes you lose weight and is in a sports car when suddenly the formula starts to wear off and he gets stuck in the small car. When the firefighters arrived at the scene they had to use the Jaws of Life to pry him out. One part that was mean was when Sherman and his friend go to a comedy show and the comedian sees Sherman and makes fun of him as everyone laughed at him. This is very oppressive to overweight people because it shows them as not even being able to have a good time and enjoying their lives.

These are just some examples of comedy movies that use overweight people as a tool of humor. Even though we all laugh at these movies maybe we should stop to think about how overweight people who are watching the movie feel. I know I wouldn’t want to watch a movie where Italians or white kids were being made fun of. Maybe we don’t need to watch overweight people getting made fun of and doing crazy things just to laugh. So before you sit down and watch another comedy movie just think about who is being made fun of in the movie.

Sophocles’ drama Antigone presents a variety of idealisms from the Greek world. Sophocles discusses social, moral, and religious values; the role of women; and the roles of leaders; with the audience and utilizes a moral conundrum to communicate these ideals.

Examining the symmetry between Creon and Antigone provides important insights into the themes of the work. The play is about a war between different values as much as it is about the struggle between two strong-willed people. Antigone is struggling against Creon, but she is also struggling against patriarchy, the power of the state, and the rules of larger society. Creon is battling Antigone, but he is also fighting against chaos, disorder, the unraveling of the social fabric. In the twentieth century, the theme of the individual and the individual conscience struggling against the power of law and the state has caught the imagination of audience members most vividly. For modern audiences and the Athenians who first saw Antigone, Creon is the symbol of a certain kind of tyrant. His good intentions, even coupled with his stubbornness and pride, would seem to frustrate shelving Antigone as a play that teaches the clich lesson of Power corrupts. Creons mistake is not that he puts lust for power ahead of the interests of the state; rather, Creons weakness is an absolute confidence in a certain set of values. Again and again, he praises patriotism, loyalty to fathers, and civil obedience, elevating these values so highly that other kinds of justice are forgotten. His position, however, is in many ways more comfortable for audiences then and now. His view means that there is at least a definite set of guidelines and rules, and the abuses and vagaries of individual conscience are not allowed to pose a threat to social order. Creon fears disorder; in the wake of civil war, his need to establish himself as ruler is clear. Antigones struggle is just as single-minded. Her devotion is to her brother and the dictates of her conscience, through which she claims to know the unwritten laws of God. But Antigones actions are also an affront to important values You went to the extreme of daring / and against the high throne of Justice / you fell, my daughter, grievously (ll. 08-10). The Chorus declares that Antigone is in opposition to the throne of Justice, reminding us that her actions are a threat to order and the institutions of law that protect the good of the people. There are different kinds of justice at work in the play there is the justice of man-made laws and institutions, symbolized by Creon, and the justice of the conscience and morality not written in law, symbolized by Antigone. Antigone proudly defies the laws of men, and suffers at the hands of those laws. Creon, in his pride, defies the laws of the gods and unwritten morality. He suffers at the hands of fate and divine retribution. The Chorus pities both of them while condemning both characters actions

The position of women is an important theme of the play. Sophocles is aware of the impact of gender on Antigone and her choices. In the opening, Ismene reminds her sister that their gender makes them vulnerable, and Ismenes gender seems to have everything to do with her belief in her own powerlessness. Antigone does not stress her own gender explicitly, but the state does. One interpretation of Antigone links the position of women to Antigones fascination with death. She seems hell-bent on being executed, refusing even Ismenes entreaty to do the rites in secret. Creon later accuses her of being in love with death, and her own words do little to refute him. She speaks in this opening of lying down in the earth beside her brother, and her words reveal a morbid kind of longing. The importance of attending to the next world outweighs, in her mind, the importance of human laws. In an oblique way, the play links this willingness to die with Antigones social position as a woman. She is a woman caught between obligations to two different men. The first is her dead brother, and the second is her hostile ruler. But Creon is more than her king he is also her future father-in-law, as well as the man in charge of her well-being since the exile of Oedipus. Her obligations are not only to the abstract state, but to a man with whom she is intimately connected. In this case, struggle against patriarchy is made literal (patriarchy rule of the father), as Antigone clashes with the man who has had a fathers authority over her since she was a child, the same man who is her future father-in-law. The result is that Antigone is restricted and ruled not only by a distant state but by the closest familial relationships indeed, the state is embodied in the men with whom she has these relationships. It is significant that Antigone, out of a sense of duty and filial piety as well as compassion, tirelessly helped Oedipus during his exile. Sophocles depicts her as a long-suffering and faithful aid to Oedipus in Oedipus at Colonus, making Oedipus yet another man to whom Antigone was bound by serious obligation. Held by this claustrophobically tight and conflicted system of obligations, the two sisters react in two very different ways. Ismene invokes her own supposed powerlessness as the defense of her inaction, while Antigone commits herself to a series of choices that she knows will result in her own execution. A common statement by critics is that Antigone seems to have a love affair with Death. The idea of a love for death is enforced by a grim symmetry between this love affair and her engagement to Haemon, Creons son. Antigone is a bride-to-be, and though Haemon is devoted to her, her marriage will give her yet another man whom she will have to obey. Eventually, the groom she chooses instead is Death. Her morbid fascination with death may be the reaction of a strong-willed woman who, in life, is caught in a system that divides her between any number of male masters. In line with this reading, one can view Antigone as being frustrated by limitation and intoxicated by the power of martyrdom. This attachment to martyrdom may be part of her motivation‹although clearly, she is also motivated both by a love for her brother and by the conviction that divine law has been disobeyed. But perhaps the death penalty makes the consequences of her action an additional benefit of burying Polyneices, rather than an obstacle. In her culture, the only power she can have is as a martyr, and by committing herself to becoming one she takes her agency back into her own hands.

Sophocles also discusses the proper role of a leader of a polis in Antigone. Creon is meant to represent an improper ruler which is seen through his decree and his obstinance throughout the entire drama, regardless of the consequences that would ensue. Even as Haemon refuses to concede that decreeing a man to not be buried right. Creon and Haemon’s argument brings out much idealism of rulers. In one of the arguments Creon believes that he owns the land, and Haemon merely calls him fools by saying it’s no ity at all, owned by one man alone. This one line communicates that the proper role of a ruler of a city is to work for the people, and not to work for one’s self. The city is not owned by the ruler, but by all the peoples.

Sophocles’ Antigone presents a dilemma often sen in society. If it is law, is it necessarily wrong? Using this theme Sophocles is able to communicate with the audience elements of Greek society but also elements that have survived throughout the centuries until today.

Los Angeles) together. They’ve chaired their good and bad times together,

never had a fight between each other. Every one is willing to sacrifice for the

others. They love each other a lot. Jason; the eldest, always felt he was a

special person. He always felt he was different than the others, as if he had

some kind of special abilities buried inside him that he can’t use. He wants to

be a doctor. Bill; the second in term of age, wants to be an engineer. John; the

third in term of age, is the calmest on of them all. He wants to be a dentist like

his father who had passed away a month ago. Mike; the fourth in term of age,

plans on working with his father in his company after he graduates from

computer science. Patrick; the youngest, who has just turned 17 wants to be a

psychologist and help other people.

As we all have been waiting for the night of December 1st, they too were

Waiting to celebrate the coming of the new Millennium, the year 000. They

five were planning to go to a party who one of their friends have been

organizing. They all went to their friend’s house to celebrate the millennium

there. It was very crowded there and they all danced. After the clock struck 1,

Jason felt a strange feeling inside him. He went out in the back yard to have

some fresh air. He suddenly saw something up in the sky, which emitted a

beam of light that struck his eyes and made him pass out. He was then taken to

the nearest hospital. He was in a coma for a week. His friends were so worried

about him. They were so happy when he woke up. The first thing he started

saying as soon as he woke up from his coma that he saw a space ship coming

from the sky and that he saw some aliens who looked just like him. No one of

course believed him, not even his closest friends who pretended that they

believe him. He was taken to an asylum. He tried to convince any one, but no

one believed him at all. To get out the asylum, he had to change his story and

pretend to haven’t seen any thing of what he had previously said. He went

directly to the place where he had saw the space ship before. As the clock

struck 1 o’clock (mid night) he again saw a space ship. It landed on the

ground and aliens came out of the space ship. Their faces looked just like

Jason. Jason started opening a conversation with them, but they didn’t speak

like our language. Some how Jason managed to understand what they’ve been

trying to tell him. He understood that he is one of them and they want him to go

with them to his home, family and relatives. Jason couldn’t believe it. He kept

thinking and thinking to go or not to go with them. While thinking of this, he

remembered his dear friends and realized he would never be able to live

without them.

This story shows how true friendship is very strong. No matter happens,

good friends are friends for ever.

In life, everyone has dreams and goals that they wish to fulfill. Some achieve their dreams and other don’t, but it doesn’t matter whether or not you fulfill your dream, what really matters is what you are willing to do to get what you want. The play, A raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansbery introduces a family called The Youngers and the obstacles they encounter while trying to fulfill their dreams of a better life. As the play progresses, it shows how their dreams get deferred and how they handle it.

The play revolves around a check for $10,000 that Mama is getting from the insurance company because of her husband’s death. Everyone in the family wants to know what she plans on doing with it. Walter Younger wants to buy a liquor store because he thinks he’ll make a lot of money, but it isn’t his money so he asks Mama. Mama says no because she thinks it is a waste of money, what she really wants is to buy a house where her family can live comfortable. Eventually, Mama gives Walter the other half of the money that she didn’t use to buy the house with. She tells him to save the money in a bank, but Walter doesn’t listen and looses the money. By the end, everything is settled and the Younger’s move into their house, even though they were offered money to move out of the neighborhood because it is a white neighborhood. The Younger’s will not let their dream be deferred because someone else wants them not to have it.

There is a reason to why Hansberry took the phrase from Langston Hughes poem “Harlem” and uses it as a title. This reason has to do with the characters dreams. They each have their own dreams and they also have one dream that the each want. Walter wants to own a business, so his family can prosper. Ruth wants what all women what and that is security. Beneatha wants to become a doctor so she can be independent. Mama’s dream is to own a house, so her family can live comfortable. The one dream they have in common is that they all want to live in a house, to feel proud of what they have. Yet, unfortunately their dreams get deferred.

A flying side is harder than you think. If you don’t know what that is, it is a martial arts move. It’s a really neat move and you can do it too. To do this move you need to wear loose-legged pants and no shoes. You also need someone to watch you and coach you as you learn.

First you take two fast but big steps. Then you jump out and up while retracting both knees. This part is kind of hard. Practicing retracting or chambering up both knees, while holding a pole or something attached to a wall will help your reflexes on this or any kick.

The next step in completing your flying sidekick is while you’re in the air; kick out your top foot with your foot pointing downward. Your bottom knee should remain retracted. The foot positioning is a bit hard, but with practice you’ll get it.

Then you keep your back arm bent with a clenched fist near your chest. Your front arm will be bent, but extended semi-forward, also with a clenched fist. You want to keep your arms up the whole time you’re kicking. This part is easy.

Lastly, you try to strike your opponent’s head with your foot. That part is fun, I think. Then you will land by putting your back foot down, then your front foot. This kick is really, really fun. Some people think it’s a bit hard, but I got it the first time.

If you would like to learn more about martial arts, you can go to Martial Arts, U.S.A. It is located right by the China King restaurant on Republic Road. That’s where I go to take Tae Kwon Do. Learning and practicing the flying sidekick has helped me to progress nearly to the level of recommended black belt. With practice and a good instructor, you could learn this Tae Kwon Do move, too.

Cause of the disputes

The Bush administration accused China of a host of trade violations, including intellectual property theft and trade barriers.

Manufacturers complained about rampant piracy of intellectual property, forced transfer of technology from firms launching joint ventures in China, trade barriers and capital markets that are largely insulated from free-market pressures, Evans said.

Evans also announced the creation of a new Unfair Trade Practices Team inside the Commerce Department to address trade barriers that are costing American jobs, as well as two new posts - an assistant secretary for trade promotion and an assistant secretary for manufacturing.

The announcements made in September, 15th in Detroit followed a series of 0 round-table discussions his agency has held around the country examining problems in manufacturing, Since July 000, manufacturing companies have lost .7 million jobs.

During those meetings, no country raised more attention as a source of concern than China, Evans said.

He gave as one example the experience of the manufacturer of Wrigley chewing gum, which has a 70 percent share of the Chinese market. Evans said that a Wrigley official told him that the Chinese were violating the companys copyrights by selling pirated gum in the city of Guangzhou and had even gone so far as to copy the designs of the Wrigley distribution trucks and were now driving the same routes.

Thats not a pretty picture, said Evans, who accused the Chinese of failing to live up to commitments it made in December 001 when it joined the World Trade Organization. China said at the time that it would open up its distribution systems to foreign suppliers and allow foreign non-bank companies to offer auto loans to consumers in China.

Evans pledged that the Bush administration would aggressively target unfair trade practices wherever they occur. American manufacturers can compete against any countrys white collars and blue collars but we will not submit to competing against another countrys choke collars.

American manufacturers have complained that China is artificially keeping the Chinese currency undervalued by as much as 40 percent to make American products more expensive in China and other markets where U.S. goods compete against Chinese products.

Evans said the new Unfair Trade Practices Team would work within the departments International Trade Administration while a new assistant secretary for trade promotion would also serve as the director general of the agencys Foreign Commercial Service, which supplies U.S. embassies with Commerce officials whose job is to help American companies operate in various foreign countries.

Senator Joe Lieberman, a Democrat representing Connecticut, said the Bush administration was late in addressing the issue.?The Bush administrations attention to Chinas trade abuses is .5 million jobs late. Weve been hemorrhaging manufacturing jobs for the last 1/ years, he said.

Senator Charles Schumer, a Democrat representing New York, said the Bush administration should be supporting his legislation to impose across-the-board tariffs of 7.5 percent on Chinese imports to penalize the country for undervaluing its currency to gain competitive advantage against U.S. exports.

China has been a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for almost two years, but is still dragging its heels on fulfilling its WTO commitments. If it were a smaller economy, some of Chinas transgressions could be tolerated, but when the worlds fourth largest trading nation ignores its obligations, Chinas trading partners ought to act.

Till now, one thing is clear Bush administrations action is based on the belief that China will not change its behavior unless it faces credible prospects of retaliation. Therefore, persuading China to comply with its WTO obligations will take a combination of economic leverage and diplomatic pressure.

US Trade Barriers against China Textile Export

Therefore, the Bush administration is promising to further the cause of free trade by putting up barriers to trade. The U.S. Department of Commerce announced on November 18th that, at the request of American textile manufacturers, it will limit imports of Chinese-made brassieres, sleepwear and knit fabrics. (Based on the Section 01-- the 174 Trade Act)

Trade advocates immediately decried the decision, but the administration argues that the quotas will only restrict the growth of imports. And Republicans from textile states have said that they would not support future trade agreements unless the administration agreed to protect the industry.

When the time comes to vote on trade measures, though, its hardly clear that lawmakers from textile states will be forthcoming with their support. And if the president gets in the habit of protecting the nations least competitive industries, his credibility in trade talks will suffer.

Thats a major problem at a time when the United States is negotiating with other Western Hemisphere nations over the terms of a proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas. Pushing other nations to knock down barriers while putting new ones up in the United States amounts to telling the world, Do as I say, not as I do.

But even if President Bushs newest anti-trade measure doesnt provoke a trade war with China, its still a discouraging step.

Trade barriers are bad news for New Orleans and other port cities, which benefit from a free flow of goods around the world. Imported steel is one of the most important products that move through the Port of New Orleans, and the effect of tariffs has been dreadful. Steel, which normally represents about 40 percent of the cargo passing through the port, now accounts for only 5 percent.

Because no Chinese textiles pass through the Port of New Orleans, the quotas wont be nearly as damaging to the metro area as the steel tariffs have been.

Even so -- and even if textile quotas do temporarily improve the health of the domestic industry -- the consequences outweigh any benefits. One researcher calculates that government restrictions on the textile trade cost the average family of three, $400 to $500 a year. Those higher prices explain why retailers are up in arms about the new textile quotas.

Textile quotas may play well in textile states like North Carolina, just as the steel tariffs have shored up support for the president in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Kentucky. But these trade restrictions hurt the cause of free trade and the nation as a whole.

China’s Reponses

China has strongly protested plans by the United States to slap quotas on Chinese textile imports of dressing gowns and bras, accusing Washington of violating WTO principles of free trade.

The Chinese government expresses deep regret over this decision, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.

The American government ignored the strong opposition from the Chinese side, made such a recommendation, violating the World Trade Organizations principles of free trade, transparency and non-discrimination.

China threatened to take the issue to the rules-based global trade body.

The Chinese side retains the right to appeal to relevant agencies of WTO to protect the rights and interests of Chinese industries, the ministry said.

A ministry spokesman told AFP Chinese officials had cancelled a trip scheduled Wednesday to the US to meet soybean sellers.

The spat adds to a rising number of disputes between the two trading giants, as the US seeks to balance a 10 billion dollar trade deficit with China blamed on Beijing boosting its competitiveness by deliberately undervaluing its currency.

The new row erupted Tuesday as Washington announced quotas on Chinese textiles after finding a flood of subsidized imports has hurt US textile makers.

A US trade panel examining a complaint from the US textile industry called for safeguard relief against Chinese-made knit fabrics, dressing gowns and bras, the US Commerce Department said.

The move, which could limit the growth of Chinese imports to 7.5 percent annually, came under the provisions of Chinas accession agreement to the WTO.

But the ministry said the US measures did not fit the provision that allows the United States and other WTO members to impose temporary quotas in the event those imports are found to cause market disruption.

China did not explicitly threaten retaliatory measures, but said overall trade relations could be damaged.

China hopes the US will realize the negative impact the decision is bound to have on bilateral trade relations, the ministry said.

A group representing Chinese textiles manufacturers lambasted the US decision as completely wrong and arbitrary.

The China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles said the US textile sector had only itself to blame for slumping production.

It insisted Chinese manufacturers had nothing to do with the sharp increase in exports, saying the growth only underscored the changing nature of the industry.

The accusations of US domestic producers to Chinese textile exporters are fabricated, there is no factual foundation, it said.

One US industry group estimated that since 001 exports of dressing gowns from China have increased by 05 percent, bras by 8 percent and knit fabrics by 8,000 percent.

But the chamber argued China has become one of the USs bright spots in its textile exportation market and benefits much more from maintaining the fast growth of the market.

It further reminded Washington that Chinas textile imports from the US have grown sharply, surging 148 percent to 787 million in the first nine months of this year compared with the same period last year.

Given that the restrictions would be calculated in dollar values rather than volume, they would affect a fraction of the total textile trade between the two countries, which suggested the move was politically motivated.

The products affected have an annual export value of less than one billion dollars, so its unlikely there will be any substantial impact on Chinese textile exporters, said Li Zhixian, a textile analyst at Guotai Junan Securities.

The US government seems to be doing this more for political reasons than economic reasons.

In response, the dollar sunk to record lows against the euro in Tokyo, with the euro hitting 1.178 dollars.

Analysts attributed the slide to worries that the US move could open the door to other protectionist barriers.

So far, China has not threatened to retaliate. And while the Chinese government said it would reserve the right to seek relief from the World Trade Organization, the statement came from a Commerce Ministry spokesman rather than a policymaker. Beijing-watchers take this as a sign that, for now, Chinas leaders dont see the issue as a major one.

That reaction is far more muted than the outcry in Europe over the steel tariffs that President Bush imposed last year. After the WTO ruled last week -- as expected -- that the tariffs violate international trade rules, the European Union prepared $. billion worth of retaliatory tariffs on American products.

Conclusion

The trade barrier battle between China and US is hard to predict and if it can not be calmed down, it is not a good thing to both sides.

First of all, China has to admit that it gives the protection to certain departments and products violate the WTO accession agreement.

Secondly, the too aggressive action taken by US against China is not appropriate.

China’s trade surpluses with American and European countries first reflect China’s police of welcome to the foreign direct investment. It shows that China is not pushing trade protectionism. In addition, China’s opening degree is also manifested in its relatively low import tariff after joining WTO. Admittedly, it still can not qualify the standards of a WTO membership.

At last, I do agree that China need to cope with the fair trade competition. And speed up its reform of every social and economy aspect. A more open and free trade market between China and US is not only good for the American economy but also good for China. So, I believe the American’s push to China to speed up its opening process is necessary but it is also not wise to push too much and hurry. I think China and USA need more talk and cooperation at this point and achieve a win-win solution based on their common goal-boosting their own economies, is not impossible.

US Trade Barriers against China’s Export

Appendix

SUMMARY OF U.S.-CHINA BILATERAL WTO AGREEMENT

AGRICULTURE

The Agreement would eliminate barriers and increase access for U.S. exports across a broad range of commodities. Commitments include

?Significant cuts in tariffs that will be completed by January 004. Overall average for agricultural products will be 17.5 percent and for U.S. priority products 14 percent (down from 1 percent).

?Establishment of a tariff-rate quota system for imports of bulk commodities, e.g., wheat, corn, cotton, barley, and rice, that provides a share of the TRQ for private traders. Specific rules on how the TRQ will operate and increased transparency in the process will help ensure that imports occur. Significant and growing quota quantities subject to tariffs that average between 1- percent.

?Immediate elimination of the tariff-rate quota system for barley, peanut oil, sunflower-seed oil, cottonseed oil, and a phase-out for soybean oil.

?The right to import and distribute products without going through a state-trading enterprise or middleman.

?Elimination of export subsidies on agricultural products.

China has also agreed to the elimination of SPS barriers that are not based on scientific evidence.

INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS

China would lower tariffs and eliminate broad systemic barriers to U.S. exports, such as limits on who can import goods and distribute them in China, as well as barriers such as quotas and licenses on U.S. products.

TARIFFS

?Tariffs cut from an average of 4.6 percent to an average of .4 percent overall and 7.1 percent on U.S. priority products.

?China will participate in the Information Technology Agreement (ITA) and eliminate all tariffs on products such as computers, telecommunications equipment, semiconductors, computer equipment, and other high-technology products.

?In the auto sector, China will cut tariffs from the current 80-100% level to 5% by mid-006, with the largest cuts in the first years after accession.

?Auto parts tariffs will be cut to an average of 10% by mid-006.

?In the wood and paper sectors, tariffs will drop from present levels of 1-18% on wood and 15-5% on paper down to levels generally between 5% and 7.5%.

?China will also be implementing the vast majority of the chemical harmonization initiative. Under that initiative, tariffs will be at 0, 5.5 and 6.5 percent for products in each category.

RIGHT TO IMPORT AND DISTRIBUTE

Trading rights and distribution are among the top concerns for U.S. manufacturers and agricultural exporters. At present, China severely restricts trading rights (the right to import and export) and the ability to own and operate distribution networks. Under the Agreement, trading rights and distribution services will be progressively phased in over three years. China will also open up sectors related to distribution services, such as repair and maintenance, warehousing, trucking and air courier services.

SERVICES

China has made commitments to phase out most restrictions in a broad range of services sectors, including distribution, banking, insurance, telecommunications, professional services such as accountancy and legal consulting, business and computer related services, motion pictures and video and sound recording services. China will also participate in the Basic Telecommunications and Financial Services Agreements.

ANTIDUMPING AND SUBSIDIES METHODOLOGY

The agreed protocol provisions ensure that American firms and workers will have strong protection against unfair trade practices including dumping and subsidies. The U.S. and China have agreed that we will be able to maintain our current antidumping methodology (treating China as a non-market economy) in future anti-dumping cases. This provision will remain in force for 15 years after Chinas accession to the WTO. Moreover, when we apply our countervailing duty law to China we will be able to take the special characteristics of Chinas economy into account when we identify and measure any subsidy benefit that may exist.

PRODUCT-SPECIFIC SAFEGUARD

The agreed provisions for the protocol package also ensure that American domestic firms and workers will have strong protection against rapid increases of imports.

?To do this, the Product-Specific Safeguard provision sets up a special mechanism to address increased imports that cause or threaten to cause market disruption to a U.S. industry. This mechanism, which is in addition to other WTO Safeguards provisions, differs from traditional safeguard measures. It permits United States to address imports solely from China, rather than from the whole world, that are a significant cause of material injury through measures such as import restrictions. Moreover, the United States will be able to apply restraints unilaterally based on legal standards that differ from those in the WTO Safeguards Agreement. This could permit action in more cases. The Product-Specific Safeguard will remain in force for 1 years after China accedes to the WTO.

TEXTILES

Chinas protocol package will include a provision drawn from our 17 bilateral textiles agreement, which permits U.S. companies and workers to respond to increased imports of textile and apparel products. This textile safeguard will remain in the effect until December 1, 008, which is four years after the WTO agreement on Textile and Clothing expires.

My Personal Learning Style Profile

My best time for learning is in the morning. After I complete my routine morning rituals, I’m energetic and ready to start the day. I feel best when I can schedule my learning time two hours after I awake and late afternoon right before and after dinner. Below is an example of my peak and valley learning times.

I’m a grouper. I like to learn from top to bottom. I like to see the broad picture and add the details later. I like to visualize the end result(s) of the new topic or subject first.

Once I have a good mental picture in my mind, the details, such as how much do I know about this topic or subject, what can I contribute, and what resources can I turn to, to achieve those results start to add to the broad picture. After mind mapping the project with the details, I like to write it all down and map it out on paper before I jump right into it. Many times I have started new projects with very little information and knowledge of the topic or subject and the end results were very successful. For example, my employer asked me to accept the task of administering the close out procedures for a Shopping Center we built in Kapolei last year. This is a very detailed and important task that is a Contract requirement to the Developers and Architects of the project. The secretary on the project had to take an emergency leave of absence and had no time to train. I had no previous experience or knowledge of how to do this close out however, I was confident that I could perform this task and the Company believed I could as well. As I dove right into this task, I never once thought that I couldn’t do it. I remember feeling a little overwhelmed but only because I wasn’t familiar with how the procedure worked or even how to proceed. I immediately made some calls for some guidelines and was told to follow the project specifications, which were very vague. The Project Manager wasn’t familiar at all with the administrative close out procedures and was of no help to me. So I was on my own. I turned to the project specifications manual for guidance and instruction. About a month later, I successfully turned over close out manuals and other required documents to the Owners that were previously reviewed and approved by the Architect. I was so proud of myself for that achievement. I am now the official close out person for Metcalf and as a result of that learning experience, I received a raise.

I generally like to learn through people and feelings; therefore, my preference(s) to approach a new subject are through feelings, tuition and emotions more so than jotting down every detail. I like to get feedback from others who have experience on the new subject so that I can get a feel for what the subject is about.

My two strongest intelligences are Musical and Intrapersonal. I enjoy learning most when I’m allowed the freedom to be creative.

I do a lot of projects at work that require me to create spreadsheets and other types of tracking documents and, I have the freedom to be creative there. I love it.

I can recall a time when my employer, at the last minute, asked me to attend and represent the Company at a public relations function that was apparently schedule a month and a half in advance, the boss just forgot to put something together for it. I had one full day to put this project together. I learned that there was a 10-foot table and a 14’ x 14’ space reserved in a ballroom at Fort Shafter for us. Now I had to fill the space with Company advertisements, banners, and anything I could think of to promote the Company. I was very excited and very motivated to take on this task. My creative mind went right to work.

I immediately went to purchase all the supplies I needed to create charts, boards, business card holder, etc. By the end of the next day, everything was done. The General Manager and I met at the ballroom at Fort Shafter just in time to set up our displays. We had a great time and it was a big success.

The General Manager gave me a letter of appreciation the next day and I had yet another great learning experience. This is my new motto now. “I love learning!”.

Ice House Lofts

Additional Research

The Atlantic Star Ice & Coal Co. originally constructed this imposing structure in 16 and operated the facility until the late 160s, as one of Atlanta¹s largest producers of ice and coal. Braden Fellman Group began construction on this award winning project in the spring of 1. The project carefully incorporates the existing historic structure into a mix of nostalgic rehabilitation, and thoughtfully designed new construction that complements the property and the surrounding neighborhood.

This attention to detail led the project to be granted a Design award from the Decatur Historic Preservation Commission for Adaptive Reuse. The buildings feature a variety of studio, one, and two bedroom loft homes featuring dramatic architecture and abundant natural light. A combination of industrial and residential finishes make for unique, practical and beautiful lofts that also offer a great value. They are one of the few remaining rental lofts in Atlanta. To preserve the character of the building, existing floors, doors, and windows and even a number of blackboards were left intact. The schools gymnasium houses 18 larger units. Thirty new units were also built on site. The arrangement of the existing and new buildings creates an outdoor courtyard with a swimming pool for the use of tenants and their guests.

Alta West

Additional Research

Wood Partners broke ground on a $7.7-million project on Howell Mill Road between 10th and 11th streets known as Alta West. The project, which at years end was well on its way to completion, includes 65 units of loft-style apartments constructed above 10,000 square-feet of retail and amenity space in four six-story buildings. The project, which includes both affordable and market-rate units, has 16 one-bedroom units and 6 two-bedroom units.

An innovative and flexible concrete ‘Outinard’ cast-in-place construction is to be utilized. In keeping with the neighborhood’s industrial character, the floors, walls and ceilings separating the individual units will be concrete. This method of construction allows units to have high ceilings common to buildings indigenous to the Artery. Of the 65 units, 50 will be for incomes $45,000 and below, in keeping with the empowerment zone tax abatement.

Summary/Proposal

After researching some of Atlanta’s top Loft Apartments, it has become clear that these communities were created with a similar vision. Each development, although varying significantly from site to site, all shared many of the same “loft” qualities. The loft idea is based around open floor plans, large living rooms, high ceilings, exposed brick/concrete, and an overall rustic atmosphere. It was interesting to tour what most would consider the ‘real’ lofts; renovated old warehouses and factories from the turn of the 1th and 0th centuries. The ‘real’ lofts on my tour consisted of the Ice House Lofts, Mattress Factory Lofts, the school portion of the Bass Lofts and the Fulton Cotton Mills Lofts. Each one has received high honors and awards for their renovation and design. They strive on the historical aspects of their surroundings, covering the walls with black & white photos of factory workers from the 1800’s and savoring a number of nostalgic artifacts from the original property. Although one gets a sense of being frozen back in time, the community offers many of the modern day amenities sought after by all residents; central heating/air, new appliances, cable/DSL capable, fitness center, pool, etc.

The ‘new’ lofts were eye opening as well. ‘New’ loft’s are the brand new developments built straight out of the ground using the loft concept. Examples of these were the back portion of the Bass Lofts, Intown (Legacy) Lofts, Alta West, and Post Biltmore. All were designed and built from scratch in the last 5 years. While these communities lack the historical attributes of the renovated warehouses, they all but made up for it by staying true to the loft qualities (floor plans). These developments are attracting residences with their high tech amenities and brand new construction appeal. They are even pulling some ‘real’ loft diehards.

Location is key. The grueling traffic in Atlanta is creating a rush back into city to avoid the everyday commute. Atlanta is also seeing a revitalization in mixed use communities and intown residences at an affordable price. It is my opinion that The James Jackson/Bolton Rd. Intersection can offer a prescription for this growing need. It lies in a portion of Atlanta that many are unaware of. It’s location offers easy access to various parts of the city and it’s interstates. It is also an area that is in desperate need of retail. I feel that the 6.1 acres located at the James Jackson/Bolton Rd. intersection is ideal for a mixed use residential community spearheaded by eye-catching retail stores at street level supporting a ‘new’ loft community above.

The story The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky, written by Stephen Crane, is a unique look at the old west and persents a different way of storytelling. Instead of focusing on the hero alone, Crane puts the Bride in the title to emphasise the importance of her role in the story. There is also an unusual ending to the story, setting it apart from stereotypical western stories. There is too, sybmolism in the story that makes it unique in its genre.

The last sentence of the story has far more significance than perhaps is concived at first glance. This very unique ending plays many roles in the final mood of the story, and resolves the major conflicts very quickly. When analized closely, it is noticable that the ending is ironic, in the story and for the story. This means that in the story, the sentence sums up the ironic fact that Scratchy has been defeated, and not by the sword, persay... but by the woman. The sentence also creates an ironic ending for the story, as it is an abrupt ending, contraditcing the expected outcome of a shootout or fight of sorts. Instead, the hero raises not a hand, and the villan surrenders without putting up a fight. By using the unique, desrciptive ending that Crane does, emphasizing the unexpectedness of the outcome with funnel-shaped tracks (67), it brings out the irony that the excitment and anticipation the story has geared up is then just shot down, with no shots fired at all!

This last sentence, while creating the irony it does, and perhaps putting a sort of downer on the ending, also resolves the story abruptly, yet effectivly. The two main conflicts are that of Jack, worried about the worlds view on his ability to carry out his duties now that he is married, and that of Scratchy, who is out to shoot up the town, and anyone in his path, especially Jack. The last sentence concludes the fact that the conflict between Jack and Scratchy is over, and Scratchy is defeated, and also concludes that Jack is still the boss, which is what he worried about throughout the story.

The role of each character in a story is very important, though each characters idea of their own role may not be the same as other characters. For instance, Jack sees his role as the town sherrif, though the Bride, and now Scratchy, see him as the husband. With more of the story having been written, we probably would have seen that the people of the town shared Jacks view of his role as the sherrif. The Bride sees herself differently that others as well. She, having come from a different setting with a different role before she got married, feels out of place, while Jack has more confidence in her, and sees her simply as his wife, and not the cook. It was quite apparent that she had cooked, and that she expected to cook, dutifully (618).

So the way each character views their own role determines much of the way they carry it out. And the idea that the other characters have of another characters role determines quite a bit of how they interact with them. We see this in the final section of the story, when Scratchys determined idea of Jacks being the sheriff is torn down and replaced with his realization of Jack as a married man. The difference, even if only in his mind, is drastic, and completly changes the way he interacts with Jack, as we see when he stands down and walks away.

In this story, the glittering parlor car symbolizes the change in the Brides life. It contrasts with her plain, underclass countenance (618) and represents her new life as a wife instead of a cook. But it also creates a mood of anxiety or worry. The Bride is not yet comfortable in her new lifestyle and role, and she projects it outside and inside. Inside, she views other people as judging her, making her nervous, and therefore, on the outside, she looks misplaced, as she twisted her head to regaurd her puff sleeves... They embarrassed her (618).

I expected the town of Yellow Sky to be more stereotypical. But as we see with Scratchy, for instance, he is not quite the typical bad guy. This is shown in a comic way when he tried to hit the paper that he knives to the door, and misses, curses, and walks away. Also, Scratchy unexpectedly gives up the fight when he discovers that Jack is married. Cranes characters fit into the town because they fit together with themselves. Each one has a place, or role, and they carry it out without conflicting with anothers role. Written by Royce
