Good morning class,

I will be analyzing how Larry Watson dealt with racism in Montana 148 and how it affects key individuals in the story.

Racism, discrimination and injustice by whites towards Indians and African Americans during the time this book was set was customary. They were underclass and were kept in their place as much as possible by the whites.

Watson shows the racism that the American Indians had to endure throughout their life through the eyes of young David Hayden. From the start of the novel, he begins to see the real world and how harsh it actually is.

Write my paper for me!!!

Marie Little Soldier, an Indian woman, was purposely created by Watson to show the magnitude of racism and influence that the American Indians had to tolerate. Racial discrimination is evident in the Hayden household, where there was a third bedroom on the second floor, but instead she had to stay in a small room off the kitchen.

Another example of racism was if a white woman was to be raped, the molester would be locked up in jail. But, if it was a Native American Indian, she was thought of as trash by the community and that she could be used and sexually abused by a white man without any charges being laid on the offender. This was the case for Marie Little Soldier. She was sexually abused by Frank Hayden, but could never say a word. This was because people would think she is just lying or they would simply take no notice as she was an Indian.

When she is murdered by Frank, we learn that racism was the main cause of her death. If there was no racism towards American Indians, then Frank would have gone to jail before he had the chance to murder Marie. Or the consequences for raping an Indian or white woman was no different then perhaps he may not even had raped Marie as he knew what the penalty was.

Ollie Young Bear is another character who is a victim of the towns’ racial prejudice. He is married to a white woman, and is forced to live like a white man in order to be accepted by the community.

There are phrases in the book such as “the only good Indian is a dead Indian” which exemplifies how they were thought of by the white community.

To understand Montana 148 we must discard our classic stereotypical views of Cowboys and Indians.

Thankfully nowadays there is much more help and hope for American Indians, and a significant waning of racism in the world today.
