My name is Michelle (Shelly) Pospeshil. I have been married for fifteen months and we are expecting our first child in a few weeks. I enjoy spending time with my husband and our two labs, Reagan and Jameson. I graduated from Iowa State University in 14 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. I moved to Houston in January of 14 and completed my student teaching with the Aldine Independent School District. I have spent all nine of my years in education with Aldine ISD. I currently work at our district Magnet Office as the District Magnet Coordinator. I work with six of our federally funded magnet schools to develop their thematic curriculum. Magnet schools were started in Aldine in 15 for desegregation purposes. We currently have sixteen schools that students from throughout the district may apply to attend because of their interest in the theme of the school. As of December 00, Aldine ISD has been declared a Unitary District which means that we have achieved our desegregation goals from the original court order established in the 160s.

My career plans include becoming a building administrator and curriculum director at the district level. I plan to graduate with a master’s degree in Educational Management in December of 004.

My teaching philosophy supports the idea that all children can learn. I feel that it is our job as educators to provide instruction in a variety of ways so that we are giving all children an equal opportunity to learn. A child’s education needs to provide them with a variety of opportunities and experiences in which to base their future learning on. I don’t think that my educational philosophy will change much when I become a building administrator. I think that I am able to have a pretty realistic and global philosophy on education in working in my current position.

People learn best through a variety of learning styles. I know that concrete perceivers absorb information through direct experiences, by doing, sensing, feeling and acting. I feel that I learn best when provided with concrete experiences and when asked to actively process the information shortly after the experience. I feel that it is important for me to utilize a variety of learning styles but I feel as if I am less able to retain information if it is presented to me in an abstract manner.

I feel that it is important for educators to understand the concept of learning styles. This theory is based on the premise that individuals perceive and process information differently as a result of heredity and upbringing. Traditional schools tend to teach students by presenting the information in an abstract manner and only asking the students to reflect or respond to the given information. This is where I feel that magnet schools do an exceptional job of addressing students that learn best through content that is presented in a variety of methods. Magnet schools allow students to experience concepts as well as immediately process or apply the knowledge gained during the hands on experience. It is important that teachers address a variety of learning styles in their both their lessons and assessments.

Cultural Profile

It was difficult finding out information on my ancestors. After several phone conversations with my grandma, the following information was discovered

My grandma’s family was from Whales. Several young boys were kidnapped or forced onto a ship headed for Canada. My grandma believes that they were forced into slavery or sold for cheap labor. Eventually they traveled to Iowa and settled in Bremer County. My great-great grandma and grandpa’s names were Araminta Sharlotta Carter-Jones and Jake Jones. My other great-great grandparent’s names were Nellie Bertha Beine-French and Charles Devere French. They owned a grocery store called Beine’s Grocery, near Plainfield, Iowa. They lived in the back of the store and my grandma remembers going to the store and getting to pick out a piece of candy which she said was a real treat.

My grandpa’s family came to the United States from Norway. They arrived at Ellis Island and began their journey west. From the research that I read, it could have taken them between four and nine months to travel from Norway to the United States. It often took another four to six months to arrive at their final destination in Iowa. That means that the entire journey could have taken up to fifteen months. I was completely amazed that people would travel for fifteen months in search of a better life. The information that I found put them settling in Chickasaw County. I did discover that they were one of the first families to settle in Chickasaw County and were one of the original members of the Little Brown Church. The Little Brown Church was built in185 near the Village of Bradford so I assume that they had settled in the area around the same time. I was able to discover that there were lots of Norwegian immigrants that were settling in the Chickasaw area during the mid 1800s. There were several Lutheran churches that were also established during that time. There was a Norwegian traveling pastor that would visit several of the Lutheran churches in the area.

I feel that both sides of my mom’s family settled in a specific area because of other immigrants and their religious beliefs. I think that there was some level of comfort knowing that they were far away from their home and families but they were able to settle near people of similar beliefs and customs. I know that that would have been comforting to me.

I wasn’t able to identify any culturally historical events that had a direct effect on my ancestors. I did find out that there were several Indian tribes that lived in the Chickasaw and Bremer County area and there was a lot of tension between them and the new settlers. The U.S. government even moved some of the Indian tribes from the area to reservations so that the new settlers could begin to plant crops and raise livestock. There were several accounts that I read about that detailed the Indians’ anger towards the settlers for claiming land.

I think that my great grandma (Bernice Doris French-Jones) and my mom (Barbara Lee Massee-Kruthoff) have had the biggest influence on me and who I am today. My great grandma went to Teacher’s College, now the University of Northern Iowa and taught in a one room school house. I think that her going to college set the tone for education in our family. Education has always been an extremely important part of our lives. My mom is a superintendent and is working on her doctoral degree. She has always supported my educational decisions and challenged me to become a better educator and person. We share similar beliefs about the educational process and what is best for children. She is someone that I will always look up to and admire for her achievements.

Reflection

I think that a person’s cultural background plays a large role in shaping their personal background. That being said, I grew up in such a small town that I have a very trusting attitude toward people. When you know the majority of the people in your town it is easy to trust. Education is also highly valued in the community and I think that, as well as my family beliefs, have had a tremendous impact on my personal beliefs about education and its value.

I think that my cultural and personal backgrounds have played an important part in my teaching and how I respond to students. I grew up in a town of twelve hundred people and in a very close family. I think that has influenced the atmosphere in my classroom. I treated each child with warmth and compassion. I was firm yet concerned about each and every student. I feel that it is important to get to know each of your students as individuals and treat them with respect.

I think that I am more likely to interact with people that have similar backgrounds and experiences. When I first moved to Houston, most of the people that I associated with were all teachers from Iowa. I had gone to college with some of them and some were new friends but we all had similar values and beliefs. I think that I have changed how I judge people since I have lived in Houston. I am much more accepting of people and open to new ideas and experiences.
