“Primitive Lyrics”

After reading the first piece by Dama and Bowra, my impression was that it is a chant of a hunter. A hunter who is about to go out into the wild and bring food back to his people. The part of the lyric where is calls himself the food-master makes me believe that he is the person responsible for hunting animals and feeding his people with it. I believe by asking may the different animals come and fall down, and let us find honey and onmions, that it is a spiritual chant to a high power to draw the animals near and help him to find other food during his hunt.

The second piece by Bushman I thought to be a chant describing either a certain time of the year at when the tribe gathers their harvest or it is related to a spiritual act where the people fast and wait until the young moon to eat. I took the young moon as being our new moon. I think that this is talking about the tribe always waits until the new moon of summer to harvest their crops, then after harvesting then they are able to eat plentiful. Also after reading it several times I seemed to me that it may be a spiritual act that the chant is about. It is an act where the people are not allowed to eat for a period of time until after the new moon has came and they can eat the following day. The lines where it says, tell me something, when the sun rises, you must speak to me, that I may eat something. Those lines of this piece are what lead me to believe that it is either about a spiritual act or harvesting crops.

I believe that the third piece by Pygmy is a prayer that the children of the tribe are not caught in the traps set for wild animals. I think that when it says, the food strikes the obstacle which strikes, rises up and bites. I think it is describing an animal trap, where as the foot is an animal stepping on the trap and the trap reacts by rising up and biting the animal. The chant wishing that a serpent is struck by the trap not one of thy sons. When he says for the children, I believe that means he wants an animal to get caught to feed the children.

The fourth piece, also by Pygmy, seemed to me that it was about letting animals live and not killing them for food or any reason. As he describe the fish, he talks of how it moves in the water then says that all lives, dances, and is loud. In this piece a bird’s action is also described and the same is said after it also. A monkey swinging in the trees with his mate and offspring is talked about and after describing them the same is said, all lives, dances, and is loud. To me, Pygmy is saying that all the different types of animals, water, land, and air, live and survives together in the wild.

My impressions after reading the fifth piece, by Pygmy, are that this is a prayer to a higher power. This takes place just after a violent storm has occurred, because he talks about a rainbow dividing the sky, the thunder which growled, and the dark sky above. It sounds as though he is talking to the rainbow, who then talks to the higher power for the people. I think that the hunter on high is the higher power; he speaks of him as being able to herd clouds. The chant also wants the rainbow to give thanks to the herder and ask of him to not be angry, or provoked, or to kill them. The chanting people are obviously very frightened of the higher power and believe that they could easily be killed by him.

The last piece, by Orpingalik, was the most difficult for me to understand. After reading it several times I think that he is trying to compare mankind to the world. Man looks at the world and realizes how little he is. I think when he says that the thoughts wash over him like floods, making his breathe come in gasps and his heart throb, this is when man tries to put it into words about how amazing the world is in it’s entirety he is overcome with emotion and is unable to find the words. It is when man is able to find the words, that great songs are born.

After reading all the pieces to me I felt as though the first and third piece are similar because they are about a man who is hunting wild animals for food and is asking for help from a high power. The fourth piece to me is unique because, the ones before it talked about hunting and killing animals; this one to me is more about allowing animals and other creatures to live together. The second and fifth pieces are similar; they both are talking to a high power asking to take care of them. The second one is asking the God to bring a young moon so that they will be able to eat and the fifth piece is talking to God giving thanks for not killing them and asking not to be angry with them. The sixth piece was very unique and different from all the rest; I understand it as a man looking at the world as a whole and being overwhelmed with how spectacular it is.
