Option A A Doll’s House

By Henrik Ibsen

The scene opened up to high holiday spirits as Nora was in the process of decorating the family’s Christmas tree. This is one of the many examples of misleading appearances in the play written by Henrik Ibsen, A Doll’s House. A drama filled with adornments of language and visual cues, eventually faced the reality of the character’s true qualities and the real depth of their situations as the story unfolded and the plot thickened.

Nora, the main character as the “doll”, was introduced in the beginning of the play as her husband, Torvald Helmer, addressed her in a condescending yet loving way, “Is that my little lark twittering out there?” And immediately, she cheerfully replied with, “Yes, it is!” Torvald continued to speak in third person to his wife, rarely without a pet name for her to respond to just as or more eagerly than he. Nora seemed childishly happy and naïve. She was not the typical housewife with many worries or stress, but one who pranced about in the house, played with her three children, and waited for her husband to come home to fancy him with her singing and dancing. Nora is depicted as the common housewife in the day of Henrik Ibsen submissive, inferior to men, incompetent, and helpless. However, Nora’s persona was shown to be misleading towards the end of the play.

Nora’s mask of fragile femininity and docility was progressively removed to uncover her real nature when Torvald reacted heartlessly upon his discovery of the fraud that she committed.

Helmer Miserable creature-what have you done?

Nora Let me go. You shall not suffer for my sake. You shall not take it upon yourself.

Helmer No tragedy airs, please. Here you shall stay and give me an explanation. Do you understand what you have done? Answer me! Do you understand what you have done?

Nora Yes, now I am beginning to understand thoroughly.

Nora hopefully wished that her husband would have reacted in a more positive, loving and devoted way by telling her that what she had done was understandable since it was out of love for him. On the contrary, Torvald continued to rant about and yelled, “What a horrible awakening! All these eight years-she who was my joy and pride--a hypocrite, a liar-worse, worse-a criminal! The unutterable ugliness of it all! For shame! For shame! (page 7).” He continued to verbally harm her with cruel and patronizing words that she had “no religion, no morality, no sense of duty.”

Immediately, Nora perceived that Torvald’s love for her was not unconditional, respectful, nor equal to the love she had for him. Her love was never reciprocated. “When I look back on it it seems to me as if I have been living here like a poor woman-just from hand to mouth. I have existed merely to perform tricks for you, Torvald. But you would have it so. You and Papa have committed a great sin against me. It is your fault that I have made nothing of my life (page 66).” She firmly decided that the right thing to do was to leave her husband and children. Finally, Nora’s façade completely dissipated and revealed her true character after she said her last words to her husband and said goodbye. The play exposed the reality of who Nora was as a strong, capable, and independent woman.

Nora’s revelation of her true self was a startling one, however, Torvald’s appearance was also misleading. Although he was introduced in the play as the kind, devoted, and affectionate husband, there was a hint of exposure of Torvald’s genuine nature when Dr. Rank said, “Helmer’s refined nature gives him an unconquerable disgust at everything that is ugly (page 8)” Dr. Rank’s statement revealed the superficial and pettiness of Torvald’s character. Furthermore, the stronger indication of Torvald’s selfish, critical, and trifling personality was when he exploded at Nora about her unlawful deed.

“But let me tell you this-if I lose my position a second time, you shall lose yours with me (page 4).” Krogstad was implied in the play to be unfeeling and self-interested as he threatened and blackmailed Nora for his position at the bank. However, he too, had an outward appearance that was misleading. “I will tell him he must give me my letter back-that it only concerns my dismissal-that he is not to read it (page 54).” Krogstad was exposed to be a sympathetic and loving man as he chatted with his former wife, Mrs. Linde about the prospect of reuniting with her once again. “I have never had such an amazing piece of good fortune in my life! (page 55).” Krogstad’s role was nothing close to being villainous and cruel.

Krogstad’s traits were illustrated to be compassionate and sincere. Meanwhile, the authenticity of Torvald’s character was exposed as self-seeking, controlling, and petty and Nora’s temperament was nothing but intelligent and determined. Despite the fact that A Doll’s House contained many deceptive and false impressions, all of them were eventually unveiled as the play ceased to a bittersweet finish.
